Let's say you are at a crowded driving range where people are waiting to use a bay. If someone using a slot finishes his bucket, how do you feel about him going to get another bucket and keeping that same slot?

Friends that I've asked about this seem split. Some say that the guy has the spot and can use it as long as he wants. Others say he finished his bucket and should get in line again.

I think the bucket signifies the end of your time, but I wanted to see if I'm off base.

He has the bay until he is completely done.

It's his spot to use until he leaves. Just because he has to get a refill on balls doesn't mean he's done with his practice session.

As long as he leaves his clubs in the spot it's his till he is done using it.

Bay is his until he is finished.

At a crowded bar, do you get up from your chair and get back in line for another drink?

Well, so far, looks like I'm off base. The range I use, the balls are a bit of a walk from the range. So, the bay goes unused for a good 5 minutes.

It doesn't bother me much when the guy sees me walk up and immediately says he will get another bucket. On the other hand, if you wait for the spot and he tells you he's getting another bucket after the last ball. That's a bit frustrating.

The guy is free to take a 5 minute break in the middle of his bucket and wipe the sweat off his face and drink some Gatorade if he wants to.

He can have a coach with him teaching him things after each shot, which would take a lot longer than just hitting some balls.

It's his spot to use until he's done.

It is shitty because he/she wastes time when they could be hitting balls, but I'd let them keep the spot.

This actually makes me think of another etiquette topic I've thought about while waiting. Like the last question, this probably doesn't really matter at ranges where the balls are close to the bays. I've seen people take two approaches when getting a spot. Some will go get the balls and be ready to go when a spot opens. Some will walk right to a spot, leave their clubs, then go get the balls.

You aren't doing anything to help your swing by constantly pounding ball after ball with no break anyways.

Did he get to the spot before you? If he waited for the person before him, shouldn't he have the right to maintain his spot? Bottom line is, until he is done and ready to leave it is his spot.

Secondly, maybe I am just not going to the same ranges... but how many ranges other than TopGolf still have "hitting bays." All the ones I go to are at the course, and are just a 50 yard long tee box that are have ropes to show the boundary.

My only problem with Top Golf is that I can't get any driver practice with those short little plastic tees.

A separate question regarding etiquette as I only play a round of golf roughly 3 times per year but attempt to hit at the driving range about once/month.

There are quite a few semi-private courses close to my house with nice driving ranges and putting/chipping practice areas. Do these types of semi-private courses allow a non-member to spend a couple of hours practicing if I only buy one large bucket of balls (with proper attire)?
