Draft promises, ethical or not?

The Thunder are rumored to have given another draft promise out this year. This one would be to Murray State G Cameron Payne at 14. Last year, they supposedly had a deal with McGary and also that DLeague agreement with Huestis. Reggie Jackson allegedly had one with the Thunder in 2011 as well.

So essentially, the players agree to not work out with other teams and have that player drop. Now there is a chance he gets drafted before, but that team will be doing a lot of guess work without their usual slate of pre-draft information.

There were also rumors Dion Waiters had a promise, but the Cavs took him before he dropped to that team.

Should this be allowed? I can see valid arguments on both sides, but I can't imagine the league office is too thrilled about this sort of collusion.

I see zero benefit on the side of the player to do this, so I doubt it's existence

The benefit is not playing for a shite team.

To maybe possibly not play for a shite team.

So in turn for a promise from one team, you will burn bridges to another that could be a potential option on the free agent market one day? Maybe one with the ability to pay you more than anyone else but will pass because you acted like an arse during pre draft?

Seems like a whole lot of risk with little reward. The NBA isn't the NFL where you are pretty much stuck somewhere for 6 years. Unless you're an Allstar, chances are high of you not being a career player whereever you get drafted and the landscape changes often enough that it doesn't really make sense to think so short term

It's undoubtedly occurred before like with Reggie Jackson. He completely shut down all workouts for all teams but the Thunder. He could have been drafted earlier, but his agents decided OKC was a good fit (It wasn't).

I would imagine if a team made a promise and strayed from it, that team would face a huge backlash from agents.

I definitely would see the appeal in choosing your destination.

But you're not really doing this. You're eliminating options, not choosing one

Because you have already made up your mind without researching the topic at all.

Give me some substance. I've made my opinion known of the situation based on the information given which is that there are "rumors" of this happening. Logic prevents me of believing this actually happens

I'm not writing a dissertation here, if you want to make a point, then make it yourself instead of saying "google" like that means anything

Point has been made. Nothing more to do here. You can do the research yourself.

Can't wait for the next presidential elections

"What's you views on the tax code?"

So the fact that Reggie Jackson shut down his workouts and every NBA person knew he was going to the Thunder was just coincidental? I don't even know what you are arguing.

His mind is already set.

I found a video of Larry Brown talking about passing on Paul Pierce (they had expected Pierce to be selected #2 or #3 but he slipped) because they had already promised the #8 pick to Larry Hughes. At least that's what I took out of it.

ETA: In addition to other articles attesting to its existence.
