You are only thinking of the negative connotations of the word.

Making the rookies sing or participate in a talent show is hazing. And theres nothing wrong with that. Some hazing produces good things.

the problem becomes when it stops being fun little things, and more importantly optional.

if a guy declines to join the singing, and you come down on him - its a problem even with the fun camaraderie type of activities.

Certainly agree with you. Originally, those hazing activities were minor and fun for the entire group. It only takes one bad egg to ruin it. If theres nothing that the young guys can learn or gain from the activity, you shouldn't do it.
Incognito is a bad egg that took things too far. In the end, you shouldn't force someone to do something that will hurt them. But I can cite many activities that are, by definition hazing, but produce positive results.

Incognito must have been kicked out of Nebraska the semester he was taking his Beginner's Management class.

my point is just that this has been going on for decades. martin is not a special snowflake
You also don't know what else is going on, only the bits and pieces coming out now.

It's likely much more than that.

Im not taking up for him at all. What he did was wrong. But to say there is no legitimate purpose for any and all hazing is patently false.

So every time you switch teams you should be hazed, based on your definition of what is appropriate for the betterment of the group.

i think the issue is the umbrella of "hazing" that bear is using here is pretty broad. odds are at some point along the way you were pushed into some uncomfortable situations that you were better off for having participated in. i think those are primarily the ones hes discussing - not the paddling, and all that nonsense.

mostly agree

the average career lasts what? 3 years at most?

I'll sing, dance, carry equipment, and even buy donuts now and then.

But 15k for a Vegas trip I don't even want to go on?

Right. There is nothing wrong with hazing for a little comradarie, but like you said, there are bad eggs like Incognito that frick it up. He takes it way too seriously and really tries to frick with peoples' personal lives. But as others have said, the coaches had to know about this. No way they didn't.

Yeah, he fricked.

Richie apparently missed the first rule of hazing - Don't do anything that leaves evidence behind.

The year after I got drafted I went to prom with my GF. Somehow some of the big league rehab guys found out and when I got to the field the next day there was a bottle of champagne a trophy a prom king sash and crown in my locker. They made me wear it ALL day during practice. Freakin camera crews were taking pictures of me and shite.

Anyways, it was funny. Hazing and jokes and stuff happen. They only do it to guys they like. If they don't like you or you can't take a joke as have no personality they leave you the frick alone.

And if you take offense or if something goes too far you can always hit someone in the face. I imagine I'd be pretty upset if someone tried to make me pick up a 30k tab.

I actually wasn't responding to you.

Hazing occurs in everyday life. You crack a joke on a friend, and you are hazing him.

But the shite that Incognito and pals have been pulling is ridiculous.

I think Martin actually is courageous by fighting back with actions, and not words.

Incognito is the pussy in this situation to me.
