I personally say no, but what are your opinions

Not sure why this was moved to more sports.

Nah, he made some good money, but his wife is meh. A real O-T HOFer would have an OT9.5 on his arm.

Selection to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is not limited to NBA/ABA players only.

Yao Ming was a superstar in China and helped build the sport internationally.

I vote yes based on those criteria not his NBA career.

If I was an administrator for the HoF, I'd want him in based on the marketing potential to the thousands of Chinese tourists that visit the Northeast each year.

If you're going to go tall then this should be your barometer, not Yao's wife (though I'm sure he is perfectly happy).

Yes. It's a basketball HOF. Not NBA. Him taking the sport global like he did affected the game enough to get him in.

There's no HOF for just NBA, so he's an obvious yes IMO

people shouldn't be able to be in a hall of fame for athletic achievement, based solely on the fact he was born as an abnormality that compliments a popular sport.

HOF seems to be more about abnormal talent in that sport + The athletic ability to maintain the level of talent.

He asked this on the OT, it just got moved here. Therefore with no context on the board I assumed he was inquiring whether or not Yao's life was HoF worthy.

On the court no, but his positive off the court impact will be felt for decades.

quote:

Mr. Silver said that N.B.A. China, which had $150 million in revenue in 2012, enjoyed growth “greater than 10 percent” last year, and that he expected double-digit growth for the foreseeable future. While revenue in China is a small fraction of the overall business — the league will generate more than $5.5 billion in global revenue this season — Mr. Silver said the N.B.A. would eventually be bigger internationally than domestically, and Asia was the key factor.

...Last month in China, the league began the N.B.A. Yao School, an after-school program named after the former basketball star Yao Ming that aims to teach basketball and life skills to children.

...Another Houston Rockets guard, James Harden, said there was “no doubt” that playing for the Rockets — Mr. Yao’s former team — had helped him and his teammates secure business deals in Asia. The ZTE Corporation, the Chinese smartphone maker, signed the Houston Rockets to a sponsorship deal last October.

“Yao really paved the way and opened the doors for all of us,” Mr. Harden said.

Would overwhelming talent also ben abnormality?
