Does anyone know specifics on signal calling using placards?

Most of them are various pictures in quadrants. Often times multiple people throw up multiple signs at once. How are they structured?

Does each quadrant have a meaning (formation, snap count)? Or are they just used as distractions? All of the above?

Tbh most teams would use them as decoys.

It really just depends on the team and how they are you used.. Simply, they are an addition to hand signals used to relay in the formations and plays.. Sometimes, different personnel groupings look to one board or coach whos using hand signals for say a line call while the QB is delivered the play and relays it to the skill position players.. Many are dummy calls..

When teams use hurry up they are usually running predetermined sequence calls that have predetermined signals from the sideline.. Sometimes its a word that changes between series that the QB calls out.. Sometimes its looking to a particular coach or board..

Every team uses them differently. There isn't one universal rule or template for play cards

Unlikely. If they were always decoys opponents would know that, which makes the decoys useless.

They mean something but there are additional indicators that tell the players whether the sign is currently active, or which placard to read, or the pictures mean something different when combined with a certain down or distance. That way the code is too hard to crack. There are numbers written on the back of those (at least in Temple's case).

Here's an example of how they work:

In this example, each picture represents one word of a play call. This play is 32 Scotland 5 Hook Right A Mustang.

The guy in the red warm up shirt is giving a hand signal that could mean one of several things: the placard is the primary playcall; that play is the audible if you don't like what the defense is showing; run that play 2 or 3 or however many plays from now; or ignore the placard and look at the coach off camera to the right or left.

No, that means Craig James, who likes bagpipes, killed five hookers while at SMU.

Here are some more serious answers:

Basically, the images mean something, but they aren't the entire playcall. They're just the most visible part of the signal. Something else fills in the blanks.
