I'm not sure I have a single straight finger left between pick up football or a game of "smear the queer" after school

Would that even exist today?

We would tell the teachers, we're going to play smear the queer and they'd be like, okay...just bring the ball back.

There was always a teacher who had yard duty and she'd stand there as we pummeled each other for the ball.

The only time she'd blow her whistle is if we started fist-fighting.

We did that and played what we called tackle throw up. Everyone tried to tackle the one who had the ball. The ball carrier tried to get into the end zone, where he couldn't be tackled and could have a moment to catch his breath.

When the ball carrier was tackled, he then would throw the ball up in the air where it was fair game for anyone to catch to become the ball carrier.

Good, but tiring, times.

That sounds similar to what we called "fumble rumble", some called it "kill the man with the ball" the latter might be a bit politically incorrect for this day.

We played often. But I remember punting the ball to kick off due to lack of Tee.

Do kids even play pick up football anymore?

We used to all the time as kids. A few of years ago in college when a lot of the old crew was home for Thanksgiving we got a gang together of about 12 on the Friday to play a pickup game on the 80 yard field at the park the kids use.

We stupidly decided to play tackle like in the old days. Thankfully no bones got broken, but the next 3 or 4 days were the sorest I've ever been in my life.

Doubt such terminology would be allowed today, probably get you sent home followed by some sensitivity classes.
