So the NHL, NBA and MLB all have fully GTD deals and we know their respective unions would never give that up but do you think that those leagues would be better if deals were only partially GTD like in NFL. Teams would be able to rebuild quicker and players would continue to give max effort rather than get comfortable after getting their payday. Now I'm pro player and not pro owner so you could force teams to spend a minimum amount(salary floor- only MLB needs this)

I believe it varies by sport and CBA. Having guaranteed contracts in MLB is a lot different than having them in the NBA.

I mean in general. For example I guarantee you a guy like Pablo Sandoval would bust his arse in the gym if he only had 30 million gtd rather than all 95

How enthusiastic would you be about ramming your head into a 300+ lb behemoth if you were getting a guaranteed contract? If that's me, maybe I'm not going as hard knowing it doesn't matter if you put my backup in or not.

A lot of people wouldn't play football if there wasn't money in it. You're asking people to consistently perform tasks that are not in their best interests. Not really the case with MLB or NBA. Those games are relatively safe to play and don't ask you to punish your body regularly.

That's not my point. If you don't think a lot of NBA or MLB players don't check out after their payday you are kidding yourself and I think it would give teams a chance to improve faster and give younger players a chance to make a team if a 35 yr old didn't have 100 million still owed

Well of course they wouldn't play for free. You wouldn't do your job for free?
No one forces them to play.

MLB. outside of pitchers, no.
NBA. Have you seen Kevin Mchale walk? or Bill Walton? Larry Bird? Charles Barkley?
If you think NBA game doesn't punish a person's body, i don't know what to tell you. i would think most teams could give two shits about paying a guy like Tyreke Evans $10 million dollars right now to leave in his last year, but they can't wihtout it still hitting the salary cap, so it's pointless.

I would prefer if all the leagues went to partially guaranteed contracts, or hell just the ability to cut players and pay them the money they are owed, but not have it hit the salary cap for the remaining years of their contract.

There were a ton of big contracts given out in the NBA this offseason, to a lot of guys that never in their wildest dreams thought they would make that much money. Hell 6 months ago most of them didn't think they would make this much. We will see a ton of those guys likely not play anywhere near as hard and hungry that they had in the past. And i'm not going to blame them, b/c i think it's human nature to do that. The ones that keep striving to be better after that big contract are the guys that will become all-stars and get bigger contracts. Some guys are happy where they are at. That's no different in any business.

Relative to the NFL, the NBA probably has just as many hobbling and hurting retired players comparably.

As long as owners were forced to spend at least a minimum I would have no problem with non gtd deals.

NFL guys get paid and check the F out all the time. Dangerous contact sport, so who can blame them. Happens much less frequently in the NBA, guaranteed money or not.

It happens very rarely in hockey, because those guys would play for free.
