Do any former professional athletes serve as officials in their respective sports?

None comes to mind in football, baseball or basketball, not sure about hockey, soccer or tennis.

Is this because they do not want to put themselves through such a highly stressful experience?

Because being a professional tattle-tail is beta as frick and not many professional athletes fall into that category.

It's hard to reach that top level of refereeing when you don't start until after you're 30.
