The United States Department of Justice has begun an informal inquiry into the topic of satellite camps by calling college football coaches, conference commissioners and college administrators, two people with knowledge of the matter told USA TODAY Sports.

The DOJ's interest, according to one of the people who spoke to USA TODAY Sports, is based on whether an NCAA ban of satellite camps — a term used to describe off-campus coaching clinics attended by prospective student-athletes — could jeopardize or lessen opportunities for youth players to be seen or have access to college football coaches.

If a coach wants to find you, he will. I can think of 100's of things off the top of my head that the DOJ should be worried about, and if Big Ten coaches can set up camps in SEC territory is not one of them.

Every SEC school should have a satellite camp in Ann Arbor. Collaborate on the schedule so that there's a camp one week after another all summer long.

What they will find is that it actually takes opportunities away from local or regional kids. Scholarships are finite, thus when Michigan gives one to an Alabama kid it is likely taking away from a Michigan or Ohio kid.

While they are at it, get rid of the Recruiting Bump, Dead Period bans. Also, get rid of the 85 scholly limit, some schools could let WAY more than 85 kids onto campus.

Sure, but that doesn't mean this

is even remotely adequate justification for the ban.

Look at the from the opposing perspective - on what planet are satellite camps bad for kids? There is one reason and one reason only for the ban - encroachment on local recruiting grounds. If you give one iota about the kids then you should be for satellite camps.

If you are an LSU fan only then you don't want colleges coming into Louisiana to hold camps. If your child is a Louisiana high school football prospect you want as many colleges as possible coming into Louisiana.

No need for the DOJ to get involved. Camps are great for kids, but it's a matter that the NCAA should handle not a government agency, my tax dollars shouldn't go to settling a dispute between college coaches.

Nike, Under Armour, Rivals, etc. can host camps that do just the same. Not that it matters, like every other dumb NCAA rule if the camps are valuable enough to the coaches someone will find a loophole and keep doing them.

Exactly. I mean I understand why this board is anti-satellite camps considering it is an LSU/SEC site, but it doesn't take much logic to see it is a ridiculous decision from the NCAA.

Someone tried telling me the ban was good for high school players because a kid should at least go to a campus before they go to a college, but that is horse shite if the kid won't even get noticed until the camp.

I'm sure they would welcome the idea.

LA had 21 4-star or higher prospects according to 247 composite in 2016.
MI had 9.

LA had 13 in 2015. MI had 4.

The only problem is college coaches are not allowed to work those camps. They might not even be able to attend them. Nike does an outstanding job but they only have so many around the country.

I don't really see how this is even debatable. This isn't about the Rashaun Garys of the world going under the radar - those guys will get exposure regardless. However, there are plenty of kids who don't have the means to travel the region/country going to camps in order to get noticed. You may show up at the LSU camp, but it's not like they're going to call small schools around the country to let them know you were there.

Michigan gets all of the flak for this, but there are plenty of smaller schools who are much more impacted.
