Unbelievable. Cutting onions for sure.

My brother. You were family to me...my heart is hurting wishing you would just burst through the clubhouse doors any second now late like always laughing telling me how many red and yellow snapper you caught last night...you were always happy and kept the biggest smile on your face...you may have rubbed people who didn't get to know you the wrong way at times but I always had your back no matter what and didn't never let you get in any of those brawls...last Sunday when you came to chapel with me is crazy now bc you said you needed to go...you just told me that your last game was "the best game I ever pitched in my life" and it was your last...I don't know if God was calling you last Sunday and made you decide to come to chapel or helped you pitch your best game but I do know I love you and I'm so hurt to see my brother go...I know I'm being selfish but you weren't just a teammate to me...you were family...I love you Josey!!! Long Live YOU FOREVER!!!! Rest In Peace my brother I hope you and God catch the biggest fish heaven has to offer. #JDF16FOREVER

I don't follow baseball and I admit I'd never heard of him. But I checked his Wiki page and to make the situation even more tragic:

Fernández announced that his girlfriend, Carla Mendoza, was pregnant with their first child on September 20, 2016.

I honestly believe it may be the most tragic death of an athlete ever.

The guy certainly left a mark on those that knew him.

Jesus...

That is just horrible.

I'm trying to come up with a comparable name to give you an example of how horrible this is. Dude was just awesome. Meant so much to the Marlins and Miami area. Seemed to absolutely love life, even though he had been through some rough times. Smiled 24/7. He'd be dominating opponents and do something on the mound and have half the athletes in the game smiling. And, it looked like he had the potential to be a great.

Just, horrible.

Same. There have been plenty times where I check my phone and see that something like this has happened. It's always surprising and sad news.

But when I checked my texts and saw this...my heart sank immediately. Got that feeling of "please, please don't let this one be real. This cannot be happening."

This is not a competition, but don't forget Joe Delaney

Nothing wrong with this.

Fernandez was a genuine, great guy and fantastic baseball player. He was very thankful for his talents and his opportunity to make a living in this country.

When I saw the news I was truly in shock. I don't think this is getting as much play as it honestly should. The world lost not only a great baseball player, but a great person as well FAR too soon than it should have.

Its pretty tough man. I'm not gonna act like I am a huge Marlins fan or anything, but I would always tune in on MLBtv when I could to see Jose Fernandez pitch. He was just a guy who moved the needle, a guy you wanted to see play. To see how much he was loved by his teammates is awesome.

Don Mattingly had a really hard time holding it together this morning, and then to find out he was expecting his first child. Just an incredibly tragic loss.

Probably one of the saddest deaths for an athlete I ever heard about. He was the best young pitcher in baseball and everyone that knew him said he was the greatest guy ever, awesome smile and personality, etc. This is sad.

True. Delaney and Roberto Clemente have much sadder causes of death.

The whole thing is just so awful. Jose Fernandez had such an infectious smile and love of the game. He seemed so fun to be around, and he was spectacular to watch. I would encourage you to go through the stickied thread as there is a link to a wonderful Grantland article from 2013.

Roberto Clemente comes to mind. Not many that compare though.

Seriously. This is the worst Ive felt after an athlete's death. Jose just seemed like a kid playing baseball, always smiling. Always showing emotion and passion, pimping the shite out of homeruns. Striking batters out at a historic rate with his nasty changeups and breaking balls... Man. Baseball lost a good one.

Clemente is in the Lou Gherig category, they both had almost full careers before they were taken. Gathers and Lenny Bias were both unproven pros who died way too early.

I don't think I can ever think of another athlete who was a proven absolute stud, just entering his prime and killed or died. Fernandez was going to make $300 million in a couple years.... Just incredibly sad.

Redskins lost Taylor way too early. How good would Bias have been?
