Yeah that's what I was saying, seem a bit meh to me.

33 K's in 38 IP in low A and A is concerning IMO.

But I don't know Appel real well so maybe he's not a strikeout pitcher.

I'm not overly concerned with his first 10 starts in pro-ball.

Didn't Appel struggle with a near 4 ERA in Single A?

Wait, I thought stats don't matter?

To be fair minor league ERA really does not matter

UH needs to make up his mind

Yeah it really doesn't, which is why I said the 33 K's in 38 IP is more concerning to me.

Seems like a really low K rate for low A and A ball.

The Cards 10th rd pick had a higher K rate in low A.

But like I said Appel may not be a K pitcher.

Yeah, it's dumb to compare stats but Wacha had 40 K's in 20 IP with a 0.86 ERA in his half season after college and that was at double A.

Appel may just be a different pitcher.

Wacha was a reliever then

and that was mixed between rookie, A ball, and AA

Nah he started 2 games.

Carlos Martinez had 98 K's in 84 innings in A+ and A ball, all starts.

Just like I said, Appel's numbers seemed really low to me but it's early so who knows.

Comparing him to Cardinals top arms really isn't fair to him.

His two starts were in rookie ball. They lasted 2 innings and 1 inning each.

Yeah he threw a ton of innings at A&M so he was very limited to end that season, I helped by posting Martinez's numbers, and at a younger age than Appel with far less experience.

Isn't it amazing the NL central loses the worst team in baseball that they were able to beat up on and pad stats, and still has 3 90+ win teams the following year?

Wonder what the records would be at if we had the Stros around for one more.

How about Wacha, Martinez, and Appel are all good. I like Appel the most out of the three, obviously. Three plus pitches and the best command. He hasn't missed as many bats as you'd think, but that will come. See Cole, Gerrit. Wacha is probably the safest bet. Awesome changeup. Martinez has the highest upside probably. Three good pitches, but he also hasn't missed as many bats as you'd think. He's also pitched a lot better in shorter roles.

I wasn't bashing Appel, just thought his numbers seems pretty low to what I've seen some of the young Cards arms do at that stage, and none were #1 picks or close.

Minors you never know with anyone, some bloom late, some struggle all throughout the minors to do much and rake at the Majors level.

And I agree, Martinez has the highest upside, but he's also the youngest at 21 and was signed out of the Dominican in 2010 so that's why you see him in shorter roles for now, he just doesn't have the experience yet.
