Earlier I was reading the article from 2014 in sports illustrated "Astros 2017 world champs". Really interesting stuff about their approach to building a team for the long term. Anyway, it ends with them drafting Brady Aiken. Which I'm sure is a sore subject in here. But my question, why did he not sign? I remember it happening but didn't follow it closely at all so I was just looking for more details. Also has there ever been another #1 overall pick to not sign?

Basically, he was damaged goods, and the Astros found out, if I'm remembering correctly.

The Astros reduced their offer after they found out his ucl was damaged, Aiken got mad and didn't sign.

Its gonna be a good day. My childhood hometown team with my favorite player's number being retired against my current hometown team. It's gonna be a pizza and beer on the couch kinda day.

How did they not find out he was damaged before they spent a draft pick on him?

Pretty sure that you're right. The Astros were made out to be a great villain in the whole situation, and it turned out they were right.

Teams aren't allowed to conduct physicals prior to the draft. Aiken's camp claimed it wasn't an issue and the Astros disagreed. The next time he pitched in a game several months after the fiasco he threw a handful of pitches and then had TJ surgery.
