I'm not a big fan of the short bench so hopefully once everyone gets healthy kemp stays up as a super utility guy.
Unfortunately, Kemp's lack of an arm means he really cannot be a super utility player. He can play 2B and LF plus CF only in a pinch like Aokisan.

In that case, someone's got to be eliminated from the bullpen
Peacock
Devo
Hoyt
Greg
Harris
Giles
Sipp
Peacock was occupying that extra spot out of the gate but he's been solid. So Hoyt or Sipp are out. Probably Hoyt in that case.

I don't see any place for tucker ever on this roster. He cannot play in the field. At least Kemp can play 2b, lf and PR.

The 8-man pen is here to stay.

Obviously it's shitty when 4 position players get hurt in 3 games leaving a short bench, but over the course of the season I feel like having an extra arm is better. Even though Sipp hardly counts as a bullpen arm.

He can plays those three spots, but with the versatility we have from almost every other position player, for me, that makes it okay for him to only be able to play those three spots. I guess he wouldn't be a super utility per say, but it would allow more in game adjustment with starters moving positions.

our starters must go deeper than they have been going.

He's a DH. For whatever reason, they never tried to make a first baseman out of him. He's definitely not an outfielder. If we do make a trade this year, I expect him to be moved. I've previously said I think he'd do pretty well if some bad team wanted to give him an extended look at DH. I could see him hitting 20 bombs.

I think Morton will end up going deeper if he stays healthy. People don't talk about how a guy used to movement on his pitches is having to adjust to a several MPH boost in his velocity. It's a great problem to have, but he's clearly having command issues at times during games.
Musgrove has the potential of being very efficient if he figures out how to handle two-strike counts better.

There's a plethora of DH bats in the league right now though so it'll be tough for him to get a legit shot.

When he finally ends up with another organization, I bet he gets a chance to play his natural position - first base - again.

Dave Cameron is still sticking to his "Astros need a first baseman" argument: "I think a team with WS aspirations should do better than an average-power/no walk 1B. It’s basically all a .500 BABIP; (Yuli) still doesn’t walk and has modest power."
Posted on 4/26/17 at 12:57 pm to Jwho77
Ideally we would have someone better, and no walks/limited power is spot on, but it's what we're working with and Yuli has delivered so far.

It's an interesting debate, but a lineup is the sum of all parts.
Over the season, they should be getting more power from other positions to make up for Yuli's lack of it. Plus, he may be a plus defender, even though it's just 1B.
I still guess Luhnow wants Yuli to end up in LF with Reed at 1B by this time next year. Let's hope Reed makes it happen.

I can see his argument. Yuli swings at basically everything and doesn't walk. He's got a really low flyball rate, hits a ton of groundballs and his success right now is basically because everything he puts in play finds a hole.
Yuli has been great the last 2 weeks. But the kind of success he's having isn't sustainable. When Yuli normalizes, are we once again left with the guy we saw the first few weeks? Groundballs, no power and no walks.

Agreed. I wonder what kind of adjustments he has made and ones he will be willing to make at his age. Seems he could try to add a little upper cut to his swing and gain from it.

I see gurriel ending up like:
.255/.300/.425
8 hr. 40 rbi

He probably is what he is at his age. He's not going to reinvent himself at 33. He's likely more of a doubles and singles hitter than a home run hitter which may be fine on this team.
Yuli isn't without power. That was a bomb he sent to the tracks the other night. But his swing just doesn't generate the flyballs to be a home run hitter. More groundball singles and line drive doubles with the occasional homer he'll run into.

Looks like he has a hunch. I would rather see Kemp go ahead and play 2b and keep marwon on the pine.
