FYI, Straw has cleared protocol and set to start the opener Thursday so we can all get ready to shite all over him.

Yeah I mean ideally it won’t be much different than Jake except for the fact Jake would hit a ball seemingly 450+ feet twice a month which Straw obviously won’t do

The difference between Jake and Straw in this lineup will be extremely small.

The difference defensively will be very noticeable. Straw is faster, and probably a bit more athletic. But, he gets absolutely terrible jumps due to not being able to read the ball off the bat. Yes, his speed makes up for some of the mistakes he makes reading the ball -- but Jake's combination of reading the ball and speed truly outplays Straw. And the big kicker of this is -- Jake was a part-time player where we're talking about Straw replacing FT Springer.

Gurriel, MaldaCastro, Staw -- does not give me warm fuzzies. That's basically giving the opponents 3 free innings per game. (now, if Gurriel can get back to spraying the ball all over the field, I'll feel better.)

Speaking of feeling better -- Deep, that's great news about your progress with treatment. I'll make sure to say a prayer or two to the Gods (baseball and the big man) for your dad.

I really want to defend Straw, but damnit he was so overmatched in nearly every at bat last season. He can get better obviously, but the issues didn’t seem timing related they were talent related. He’s kinda poop in CF but full offseason of reps I think he can at worst be league average there.

Deep, glad to hear you are doing well!

Sorry to hear that about your dad, hopefully the Astros play some good baseball this season to give him something to look forward to during his treatment

So am I free to call you an a-hole this season without feeling guilty?

Seriously, I'm thrilled to hear that for you. You know your DAT crew will be rooting for more good news on the upcoming scans.

We always get this sort of news about the Straws, the Toros, etc. If it were one of the stars, they’d be out longer than A&M’s basketball team in February.

I did a pretty horrid job of keeping up with ST, so trying to get up to speed and sound like a know-it-all to my buds by Thursday

Is there a chance we get a Pedro Leon sighting in the outfield this season?

Highly unlikely. I don't think he'll get enough ABs to be prepared for it, and they won't be rushing to open a 40-man spot and start his clock based on a limited number of minor league at bats unless maybe he murders minor league pitching at an insane level.

Prob for the best I suppose. Didn't know if they'd face any pressure to bring him up if the Myles/Chaz experiment looks atrocious by mid-summer

Yeah, I would guess they'd just trade for someone to fill the void for the rest of the season (say, Maybin or Jake).

Both the Luhnow people and Click people love Leon though, so there's a better than zero chance they could think by mid-summer that he could help them in October

I am all too familiar w glio's

Location is the key to the possibility of long term prognosis

Lost my godfather and closest uncle to one on Nov 1, 1999

When we won the WS on Nov 1, 2017, he was who I thanked.

I have a patient that has survived fully functional from a glio removed 20 years ago at MDA

There is hope.

@Chandler_Rome
Astros general manager James Click said there were "more conversations" with Carlos Correa about an extension over the weekend. Click did not answer whether he feels they are closer to a deal. Correa's deadline is opening day.

That's not a deal that's getting done before the season.

Not enough motivation on either side.

Astros want the carrot dangling, and Correa's not giving a hometown deal

Carlos: "Lindy, it's Coco. You gonna sign that thing or what?"

Frankie: "Let me tell you something, Coco. It's a definite maybe."

Glad to hear you're doing well 5 Deep and sorry about your dad. Hope he keeps his spirits up.

I also wanted to ask you guys what you think of Toro this year? Thought he filled in admirably in 2019, but was awful last year. I don't expect him to be a good hitter, but he has versatility in the field and plays decent enough defense. Guess we'll see.

Aledmys 2.0... I don't see him having a big impact, but might be able to get us through a DL stint or two.

5 Deep,

Hopefully your dad keeps his spirits up.

I was always high on Straw coming through the minors... but he just can't seem to hit big league pitching.

Some updates from Brent Strom:

- Scrubb (shoulder) should be back around mid-April
- Baez (COVID) could be in late April
- James (hip) is feeling good and could return late May/early June
- Valdez: "News is very, very exciting and very good."
