Cubs likely done making moves now since they've dealt one of their top prospects?

It's what the Cubs need--team controlled pitching at a friendly price. They get it thru 2020 (if options picked up) and fill a hole that will be left by Lackey after the year.

What has happened to you man? I used to expect baseball brilliance. This fall is sadder than Lincecum.

I'd like to fill the lackey hole now instead of waiting 3 months.

Cubs fans who are upset you traded Eloy...where was he going to play? Heyward, Zobrist, Schwarber are all likely going to be clogging up corner OF spots. No DH for a majority of the games.

Getting a Quality, team friendly controllable contract Lefty Starter cost a high Premium. It's the way of the game now.

Also, his last 7 starts, he has a 2.40 ERA

Heyward has been awful and Zobrist is on the downside of his career. Schwarber got send down a few weeks ago. Their outfield isn't the Red Sox outfield

You might think, but I'm sure they threw this offer out to a number of guys and if teams reject it, that's what you get.

Pitching is at a premium

I wonder if the emergence of Happ in the OF made them feel that Jimenez was more expendable than they did before.

Good write up from the Athletic about this trade already...here's an excerpt:

quote:

For those who doubt Quintana’s skill set, consider this. Over the past five seasons (including this one), Quintana is tied for sixth with Jon Lester in pitcher WAR (according to FanGraphs) at 20.1 and seventh at 19.0, according to Baseball-Reference. He’s highly durable, one of only nine pitchers with at least 900 innings since 2013. He has made 147 starts during that time, topped only by Max Scherzer, Lester and Jeff Samardzija. For pitchers with at least 500 innings pitched who exclusively pitched in the American League – where lineups are inarguably deeper – Quintana is 11th since 2013 with a 3.48 ERA. Whether you use simple stats or advanced ones, it’s hard to disagree that Quintana has been one of the best starters in baseball in the last half decade.

And he’s under contract for 2018 for $8.85 million, with options for 2019 and 2020 at $10.5 and $11.5 million. That’s insanely cheap considering the price of starting pitching. Outside of dreaming about Michael Fulmer or Marcus Stroman being available, there really isn’t a team selling that had a pitcher who fit the Cubs future better than Quintana.

The Cubs were borderline desperate for a sub-30, cost-controlled pitcher and most realistic scenarios didn’t end with them finding one this summer. Quintana suddenly becoming available to them is a huge break in their fortunes. That they are also able to take a potential upgrade from their division rival Milwaukee Brewers, who were also interested in Quintana, is a nice bonus.

This is an organizational-shifting move in the Cubs’ eyes. The front office sees a window with this offensive core of about three or four years after this season. Cease certainly didn’t fit that window and while Jimenez likely would have, he doesn’t address the clear need of pitching. To realistically compete in the second half of this season and years beyond, the Cubs needed to add at least one cost-controlled starter. With this move, they’ve now brought in an arm they believe is a No. 2 caliber starter to team up with Lester and Kyle Hendricks. They’re high on Mike Montgomery, but their work will likely continue in the offseason as they attempt to add a pitcher like Alex Cobb along with possibly one more pitcher to compete at the back of the rotation.
