I'm sure WGN showing Cubs games when that was the only baseball you could watch had something to do with Cubs fans back in the day. I have a buddy who got started with them that way.

This is what I've always assumed to be a big reason why there are so many Cubs fans in the south. It's not like they are the Yankees or Cardinals who have a history of winning a lot for people in the south to gravitate to, so that's why I've always assumed WGN.

Pulling for the cubbies in this series.

Astros-cubbies WS with the Astros winning on a controversial call in the bottom of the 9th of game 7 is what I'm hoping for

This, plus the smooth stylings of Grace, the Hawk, & Ryno....

Cardinals have those fans because for a really, really long time (like 3/4 of a century or something) they were the furthest west and furthest south team in America. Plus they have the second-best tradition in baseball and have minor league affiliates in the South as well.

I've run across a lot of people in places like Tennessee, Mississippi, and so forth that are Cardinals fans because their pappy's pappy was a Cardinals fan back in nineteen dickety-two. Same thing with the Reds, too, actually, in Kentucky, parts of Tennessee, West Virginia, etc.

The Cubs absolutely own the states of Indiana and Iowa, for some reason.

So being geographically close to the next state where a baseball team calls home is your reason for being an Astros fan? What a shitty reason...

Other than following and becoming a fan of a team because your father or significant family member was, what is a better reason? I'm from Louisiana. I'm a fan of LSU and the Saints. Such a shitty reason.

Relative proximity is one factor, the other is the radio signal. Before the advent of super broadcast stations being picked up on cable television (WGN, WTBS) there was radio. KMOX out of St. Louis is a 50,000 watt blowtorch station, like WWL in New Orleans is. At night, almost the entire south-central region of the United States can pick up KMOX, EVERYONE heard the Cardinals, plus any type of relationship they may have had with other broadcast stations on the network, especially in the towns of their minor league affiliates.

Chicago had one, too, but that one likely competed with KMOX, thus another layer in the Cubs vs. Cardinals rivalry.

Heck even within the last 20 years, I've listened to Detroit Tigers baseball on terrestrial, A.M. radio for the same reason. Atlanta, as well. Got to listen to a number of games before Ernie Harwell died. They'll never make another like him.

Growing up in a place is one thing, but you saying "at least I live somewhat close to a state that has a baseball team" isn't exactly the best way to reflect that it makes someone less of a fan.

I'm pulling for an Astros/Cubs WS, but know that it's pretty unlikely to happen.

Since Louisiana has no team I have always kind of been all over the map with baseball. I've always liked the Astros because they were closest to home and I've been to a couple game. I used to like the Braves because I grew up watching them on TBS daily. As I grew older I began to like a few of the older teams (Red Sox, Cubs, Dodgers).

I'd rank my fandom:
1- Astros
2- Red Sox
3- Cubs
4- Dodgers

My body is ready. My two favorite teams. Although I have to admit I really like the Royals, and I kinda like how the Cubs have their streak.
