I witnessed several instances where helmets are coming off in defensive pileups. It's starting to look like coaches are telling players to rip helmets off. There needs to be a defensive penalty in some of these cases.

This.

Watch a replay of LSU-TCU and there were several slo-mo replays where the LSU ballcarrier had their helmet ripped off by TCU defenders and the referee didn't care when the LSU guy told them "They ripped it off me!"

Specifically Jarvis Landry in the 2nd half. They even showed the replay, and showed the TCU defender getting a hand full of facemask.

If a helmet comes off, theres probably some hands being where they arent supposed to be causing it.

They shouldn't have to miss a down if this is the case, but then you're relying on refs to call it right.

they don't have to miss a down if it's taken off them, but yeah, refs probably aren't going to get that shite right.

They don't have to miss a down if it comes off due to the other team ripping it off. The key is that they have to see it. In other words if they call the facemask or hands to the face then they can stay in. This rule encourages people to fit helmets better.

The announcer explains the damn rule every time a helmet comes off. Even if it's the 3rd time that game.

All it's gonna take for a change is when this happens in a key situation to an impact player. For instance last night when FSU had to trot out Coker for one play cause Winston lost his helmet, it'd be freaking awful for them or any other team if that occurred on a key down late in the game

Really? Has there been a big issue with players intentionally keeping their helmets loose? If so, why hasn't the issue been cleared up now that the rule has changed?

Like a do-over on a missed PAT in a game that ended 10-9? I really hope we aren't the poster child for another rule rescission after it costs us a game.

Define "cleared up". The ACC study comes to mind showing the incidence declined the first year of the rule change.

I'd like to see that study. Not saying I don't trust you, but "studies" done in an environement of CYA are usually slanted.

Let me ask you this, can you cite 3 examples in the last 20 years of a player getting significantly injured due to the fact that his helmet came off during a play?

If you can't locate it online, you could probably write the ACC or check with the NCAA.

Define "significant injury". Since I was standing 10-20 feet away, I personally know of more than 3 examples of player injury due to the helmet coming off during the play.

Why would you NOT want to take common sense steps to lessen the possibility of injury, not to mention liability, and keep the game from being stopped unnecessarily?
