College basketball rule changes I wish would happen but probably won't

1. 4 12-minute quarters. College basketball isn't too long, and the season isn't so long that players get tired. Nothing wrong with a 48-minute game, and there are no "sacred" stats/records that would be threatened by the longer game.

2. One shot clock per possession. If you get an offensive rebound or get fouled on the floor, good for you--take all the time you need now.

3a. Forego free throws in exchange for a timeout. This comes in handy at the end of the game when you're protecting a lead and the other team is fouling intentionally. Anytime you get fouled and are awarded free throws, you may burn a timeout (as long as you have one) and forego the free throws in exchange for in-bounding the ball.

3b. If you're in the double bonus, you may shoot the first free throw and then forego the second free throw and burn a timeout in exchange for the ball out of bounds.

4. Bring back jump balls. Re-draw that dotted line in the lane and tip it off when two players tie it up. Furthermore, when the ball goes out of bounds and you don't know which player touched it last, have the two players in question tip it off. The whole reason for the possession arrow is to save time, which is why it's infuriating when they go to a 2-minute review in the waning minutes to determine possession when the ball goes out of bounds. "Too close to call" plays are random and can be resolved equitably and efficiently with a jump ball.

5. Expand to 96 tournament teams, with the 32 auto-bids receiving a bye to the round of 64, and 64 at-large teams playing for the other 32 spots. This achieves two goals desired by two parties: it expands the tournament (which the people with the money would like to do), and it still places more emphasis on the regular season and conference tournaments (which the fans would love). For example, Virginia would probably be playing Georgetown tonight for the right to play Gardner-Webb. LSU would be playing like, ETSU tonight.

2, 3, and 5 suck, but the 1 and 4 are solid.

Not surprised on 2 & 5; surprised that 3 is a "no."

4 10 minute is fine. Reset team fouls after each quarter.

One shot clock per possession.

I think it should be extended to 35 seconds again

Sounds a bit too gimmicky

Agree

Expand to 96 tournament teams

Hell no, bring it back to 64 if anything at all

Would prefer the shorter shot clock reset like in the NBA

Nope. 10m quarters if at all

Nope. Reset it to 15 (if already under 15). Otherwise keep it running from where it was

Nope. I dont want teams allowed to sub out bad FT shooters for 1 play

4. Bring back jump balls

Ok sure. But only in the 4th quarter

5. Expand to 96 tournament teams,

Nope. Reduce it back to 64. frick the 19-14 power 5 teams

If we did expand the game like this, it would be harder to state quadruple-headers in conference tournaments. Well, what's wrong with basing conference tournaments on triple-headers? This would basically give a conference's 1-seed a bye to the semifinals, placing a different kind of emphasis on the regular season. Here's the SEC tournament, assuming the high seed wins each game:

Tuesday
13v14

Wednesday
8v13
9v12
10v11

Thursday
5v10
6v9
7v8

Friday
4v5
2v7
3v6

Saturday
1v4
2v3

Sunday
1v2

Too many at 96.

Go back to conference champs only. That makes the conf tournaments play-in games for the big boys.

The losers can do n.i.t.

Don't care for any of your notions.

#2 is quite literally one of the worst ideas I’ve ever seen on this board. If you get an offensive rebound, the other team would be forced to use up all their fouls to give to get the ball out of your hands, much less the second caveat about getting fouled turning off the shot clock entirely too.

4 10 minute quarters would be fine. The end of games take long enough, I wouldn’t want to extend the game more

Jump ball is a popular change that I think is ridiculous...why should the height or jumping ability determine who gets a possession when both players dove/scrambled for the ball. If anything, they throw the ball down and have the 2 players scrum for it.

I know a good way for the other team to solve that.

But hey, it’s obviously not a popular idea.

Same reason arm strength is often a deciding factor in who gets to win arm-wrestling matches.

You’re turning college basketball into a glorified version of everyone’s favorite “stall em” basketball. The offensive rebound one actually isn’t even the worse idea. The no shot clock for an on the floor foul is an even bigger problem. Now you’re actually putting major consequences in the hands of basketball officials.
