We all know coaching college basketball is a notoriously dirty profession, but can you think of a high level coach who does things mostly by the book?

It was John Beilein but he hasn't coach college basketball in a few years. Maybe Tony Bennett?

Bennett. Matt Painter strikes me as a clean coach but I don’t follow big ten hoops recruiting super close. I’m not sure any of the top SEC coaches are that clean, maybe Musselman

I don’t think Jay Wright is clean, but I don’t think he’s as is in the dirt as some of the other very top guys like Self, Izzo, Cal etc are

The truth is likely that none of the well known coaches are clean, there’s just different degrees of rule breaking

You are asking a question that can't be answered. The best cheaters are the ones you don't hear about and they don't do quite well enough to make it to the "it is just assumed they are cheating level".

We simply do not know who if anyone is clean.

Coach Pete Bell was clean until Shaq and Penny were up for recruiting.
E: I'm sorry, I meant "Neon" and Butch.

Of those that have had any success, Toby Bennett would be my best guess.

Back in 2017, CBS conducted a poll asking college basketball coaches who the cleanest coach in CBB was. John Beilein finished in first place by a country mile with over 26% of the votes. Mike Brey finished in second place with a little over 10% of the votes. Also, keep in mind that Brey has lasted at Notre Dame for over 20 years despite never making it to the Final Four. That suggests to me Brey is a squeaky clean coach to have lasted that long despite having only moderate success.

The clean ones are the ones who don’t get any elite recruits. So they’re only successful if they can win with inferior players or find underrated guys and develop them. Good luck…

I love how the media likes to pretend Duke, UK, and the like get kids to play there for free.

I think, as a major conference coach, it’s a job that you take with the realization that you can’t be clean and keep your job long term. Thus, the dilemma of trying to fulfill your career dream.

Agree, we will probably never know unless they get sloppy.

Mark Few- cleaner
Jay Wright- dirtier than perceived.
Greg Gard- cleaner
Musselman - cleaner
Mike Brey- torn, he probably can't be as dirty as he would be due to school.
Tommy Lloyd- cleaner
Scott Drew- dirty

Great point about Brey. I just assumed he was dirty because he was an assistant for K.

The key is to cheat without being dumb enough to get caught. Will Wade was incredibly stupid. That’s his biggest crime. Everyone acting like the cheating he did is actually the issue is naive or just selectively stupid.

Dana O’Neil slammed Wade less than a week after she wrote another love sonnet about Pitino. Seriously? Seth Davis called Wade a stain on the sport. Seth Davis graduated from Duke, which somehow signed Zion Williamson after he turned down money from Kansas.

This is why I’ve grown to hate college basketball.
