This is based on data going all the way back to 1996. With the exception of 2000 Oklahoma, every team that has won a national championship since 1996 has had at least two Top 10 recruiting classes in the four years prior to the championship season.

Four of those teams have had Top 10 recruiting classes in each of the last four years:

Alabama
Ohio State
Florida State
LSU

On paper, the above are the four most talented teams in all of college football. The next tier features four schools that have had Top 10 recruiting classes in three of the last four years:

Auburn
Georgia
USC
Texas A&M

And four schools have had Top 10 recruiting classes in two of the last four years (the minimum criteria):

Tennessee
Michigan
Clemson
Florida

Going by history and the data we have on hand, your 2017 national champion will be one of these twelve schools.

Is there a way to bet on these 12 teams to win it all in Vegas and make money?

As much as this website will hate it, neither will LSU.

Or Auburn.

That leaves 8.

Michigan is replacing pretty much their entire defense.

Plus Florida on the list?

I'd say there's only 6 teams that can win it.

Exceptions need to be made for elite qbs and offenses like a Washington or Penn St -- certainly those 2 teams have a much better chance than Georgia, Tennessee, Texas A&M, etc

Elite QBs can only get you so far if there isn't any talent around them. We saw what Alabama's defense did to Browning in the Peach Bowl. He literally was the only player worth a damn on offense.

Compare that to Clemson who had Deshaun Watson and other 4-star and 5-star talent scattered about the offense and defense. It makes it easier for elite QBs to win the big game when they have some elite talent to throw to.

Ok. Not comparing penn st and Washington to bama. I'm comparing them against UGA, Auburn, Texas AM, Tennessee and Florida -- all of which have a much less chance to be in playoff than penn st or Washington

so Southern CAL since they are the only good one from their conference.
Half the SEC is on your set of lists. Pretty hard to win the SEC west.

More so because you lack the necessary QB

I don't think Etling wins the job

Now that doesn't make your statement any less true, but we know Etling isn't beating AL or FL

Another QB may fare better

Other than Ole Miss in the first half and Clemson, the only team that could even hang with Bama last year was LSU... They'll be dangerous next year. They have the defense, and the horses at the skill positions on offense. They're a wild card right now, but they're a competitor if O-line and QB play are there, and the new OC is the real deal.

Auburn has had 5 straight top 10 recruiting classes so the "data" in your OP is already shite
