I don't have much to write today and that's probably doing everyone a favor here. Rizzo smoked a HR last night, thank God. Schwarber with some nice timely hitting (what is that like, anyway?) to get an insurance run and Rondon nails it down in the 9th.

Huge day today. Will the Cubs add pieces? Will they give up on Castro today? Or will Javy get some new threads?

Go crazy, kids.

All I know is last night we hit a leadoff single, got to 2nd on a passed ball, bunted to 3rd, then hit a sac fly.

Son, i was so excite.

Didn't Rizzo get to third with no outs and not a single run was scored that inning?

Yap.
Soler grounded out to pitcher.
Castro K'd.
Ross grounded out to 3rd.

Castro's ground ball rate is now up to 1.35, up from last years 0.85.

Disclaimer--this is not a hate on Castro post. Just posting a stat I saw last night.

If we do anything of significance today (beyond middle innings bullpen guy/5th starter rental) yea.

The insurance runs in the 9th after the big hit was great to see. Especially from the part of the order (castro, hererra and an out of place bryant) that was up.

Cubs add Dan Haren to the back of the rotation and Tommy Hunter (right at the deadline) for the bullpen.

Very nice work, Theo and Jed. Gave up nothing (pending Hunter deal) of significance but addressed the need and add veteran presence to the roster. I'm pleased.

ETA: Junior Lake goes to the Orioles. They love our AAAA players.

Giants and Mets got a lot better.

And now the debate starts on how long they let Castro block Baez in the lineup.

Well, Baez still has a lot to prove yet.

Time to predict the roster moves...Soriano DFA, Medina optioned to AAA for Hunter and Haren to join.

I'm satisfied.

We have other moves that hopefully will be made to the big club that could have a nice impact. Baez for Castro, bring up Edwards possibly, get a few other guys healthy.

Read that Lake was out of options after this year. He doesn't havea permenant role on this MLB roster, so it's a good deal.

We got Haren and Hunter for literally nothing.

The biggest improvement for this team will come from within.

La Stella, Montero, and Ramirez will all be back. Baez should carve out a role. Young hitters will continue to grow and get better.

If we get to that WC2 spot, I like our chances with Lester or Arrietta.

Lester, Arrieta, Hammel are a really good top 3. That's not the question. Can the Cubs turn the offense around? I'm not going to get so frustrated if they don't considering how very young the lineup is.

But there are good things happening, like Schwarber being up and Russell turning it around.

I'm stoked we didn't move Baez. If he figures it out, he'll payoff 10x what any player we brought back in a trade.

We are still a year early..Let's keep enjoying the ride these kids are taking us on.

Great day for the cubs. Didn't give up anything chasing the hopes of playing in a 1 game play in game.

Got exactly what everyone wanted, a 5th starter, at least until the rumors started swirling and everyone wanted them to at least marginally abandon the plan.

Camden is hitters park. Not sure what this will mean for Hunter

I'm fine with what we did too. Sure it would be nice to make a big splash but not at the expense of selling the farm. And it we had a realistic chance at winning the division it would make more sense.

I look at it this way.

The giants aren't going to keep playing at the .885 clip or whatever they're playing at the past 15 or 20 games, and the mets offense still kind of sucks.

Both World Series teams last season were wild card teams

Playoffs should be the goal whether you're winning the division or are the 2nd WC team. There is so much parity, it's really whoever is hottest at the right time
