Tough weekend for the Cubs as they drop 2 of 3 to the Brewers. The Cubs have a bit of a struggling offense with the K's mounting for Bryant (19 in 15 games) and Soler (38 in 24 games...yikes). After the weekend, Bryant is down to .278/.418/.370/.788/123 and Soler is down to .269/.337/.409/.745/107. Bryant does have 12 BB in his 15 games, though, so that fine. Soler only has 8 BB and his K rate is skyrocketing as he chases pitches low and away.

I've watched their AB's somewhat closely and it just seems like right now they are missing their pitches. Bryant is drawing walks but we'd like to see Soler be more patient.

Chris Coghlan is also struggling and his mediocre defense doesn't carry his .212/.268/.409/.677/86 line. One would think, though, that Coghlan won't be tied for the team lead in HR's for long. Rizzo and Bryant and hopefully Soler as well will heat up with the summer.

Javy Baez has since returned to Iowa. In his 4 games, he's hitting a respectable .263/.263/.526/.789 considering the recent events in his personal life. He did hit a HR, though.

Peep this LINK for a whole slew of prospect HR's and video. Over the weekend, Billy McKinney hit 2 HR's in one game. Dan Vogelbach TRIPLED and Kyle Schwarber murdered more baseballs. Alcantara is also regaining form and is slashing a decent .279/.354/.605/.959 with a 5/11 BB/K and 3 HR, 1 2B and 2 3B.

Some roster stuff...the Cubs signed LHP Daniel Schlereth to a minor league deal and he will report to AAA Iowa. Justin Grimm will go on a rehab assignment. Hopefully that goes very well. The Cubs also claimed RHP Anthony Varvaro off waivers from Boston; he'll go to AAA Iowa and RHP Joe Ortiz was DFA'd.

ETA: Totally forgot, but the game tonight is on ESPN and tomorrow's game is on MLB Network.

They are simply caught in between. Taking lots of pitches right down the middle of the plate over the weekend and chasing pitches out of the zone. Bryant chased a lot of high fastballs against Fiers. Soler has been chasing sliders. They are slumping.

Not even slightly concerned about this lineup right now though. They will go on tears and they will have slumps.

Chris Coghlan is also struggling

His numbers suck, but this isn't entirely true if you've watched his at bats. He would have had 3 homeruns in 1 game against the Pirates last week if the wind wasn't blowing straight in.

Coghlan's K rate is slightly elevated for him (20.8% in 2015) and his LD% is 27% (7% points above MLB average). His BABiP is .229 and for his career he's a .318 BABiP hitter--last year he was at .337. I don't know that the Cubs are panicking about Coghlan at all and I'm okay with that.

If I were betting, I'd say the Cubs let him figure it out or see if he comes out of the slump before making some kind of move to address it. And I'm perfectly fine with that.

Long homerun yesterday in his first AB of the series.

2 run single with 2 outs in the top of the 8th inning in a 3-3 game right after Pedro Strop got a 5-2-3 double play from Ryan Braun and intentionally walked Adam Lind.

I think we struck out close to 20 times on saturday. and then yesterday after working into trouble strop got a 5-2-3 double play with the bases loaded and no outs. Then we walked lind to reload the bases to face rammy...and the babip gods shat on us. Pretty good pitch up and in and rammy turned on it and placed it over bryants head with a little broken bat blooper.

Wait, I think I saw that double play. It was Bryant to Montero to Rizzo, right? I must have missed the next AB...I was at a get together. Before I knew it it was 5-3.

I was a bit disappointed the Cubs couldn't get a sweep against Milwaukee. They were a really struggling team and the Cubs were motoring along.

This is a big test in the early season.

Ugh..that saturday game. Go back and look at the team blooper reel that was the brewers little league inside the infield home run.

I agree. Need to split at least. Not that it spells doom if we don't but we were riding quite a high and then crashed quickly (to be expected with a young K friendly lineup).

Did this one get anchored because cardinals fans needed to start 2 game threads?

ETA: Whew...it did not.

If I'm being honest, my thread was the second Cubs thread by a minute. I did a lot of typing and researching before I hit submit, though. Mine even has a picture!
