11 games over .500, 8 games over on the road.

Our new toy Haren goes tomorrow and we'll see Schwarber back in the lineup for next few days.

It may be Javy time soon. The Cubs will have some interesting roster decisions to make. Do they call Javy up in August with the team doing so well now? Do they let him continue getting AB's in Iowa (he HR'd again last night and didn't K...he's seemingly found a new approach and has really taken to it successfully). Mike Olt is hitting again and he's a good defender. Miguel Montero will be up soon.

ETA: Taylor Teagarden was just DFA'd and cleared waivers. That puts the roster at 24 I think...let me check...

ETA 2.0: Nope, we're at 25. Szczur is up...for some reason.

Playing the pirates...trolling Polanco.

ETA: Did you read Mooney's piece on how soler could find the bench soon with montero coming back (coghlan to RF, schwarber to left)?

Soler is .316/.366/.342 over the past two weeks. Guy is starting to hit a little bit, I don't think he should be benched. The power hasn't been there, but it could be coming. 23 yo making some progress and you're winning games, let him go

Well i'm sure he'd still play against righties.

quote:

The Cubs are looking for ways to keep Kyle Schwarber’s bat in the lineup, possibly moving Chris Coghlan from left field to right, which could displace Soler, who isn’t hitting for power yet (five homers) and doesn’t make up for it on defense (-10.5 UZR/150).

For what it's worth, I agree with you. I don't read it as being benched for good, just that he'd be the guy who goes in and out when the lineup shuffles.

Barring any additional injuries, I don't think we see Javy until the rosters expand.

Montero takes Sczur's spot and La Stella takes Herrara's.

Ramirez can kick Soriano off the 25 man when he's ready.

Also, with the addition of Tommy Hunter it's possible the Cubs bullpen could be down to 12 instead of 13 when La Stella and Montero come back.

Good point.

I can see Maddon using Coghlan to spell either Soler, Russel, Castro, and Bryant vs righties down the stretch.

That Baez though. If he's figuring it out, you'll need a name change

Yeah, they already seem to give Soler the day off every once and awhile. I don't think they should platoon him though

The author can't really cite his lack of defense when you're throwing Schearber in the OF in his stead

There is plenty of playing time to be had between Coghlan, Schwarber and Soler. But if Javy gets called up there's really nowhere to put him. It's a good problem to have, but I don't know how they figure it out. Starlin's playing better since the trade deadline and Addison Russell has been an entirely different hitter since the All Star Break while maintaining that special defense he brings.

I think we won't see Javy until September. He's an everyday player without an everyday job opening right now. Slow and steady with him is fine. But like Maddon said, he is more than the power potential. He's a great defender, a great baserunner and has a high baseball IQ.

He comes off the DL soon and then a decision will have to be made. I'd assume he's an upgrade over Herrera as that UTIL bench IF.

Baez is most likely an upgrade over both, but really can't give him everyday ABs.

I'm loving the flexibility in the lineup. This team is fun to watch with Maddon playing puppet master

Baez needs everyday ABs, especially if he's refining a new approach. I have no problem a him staying down

Unless they decide to bench Castro. He's 8 for his last 36, I'm not sure he's playing better. Guess it's hard to play worse though

Castro is hitting .290 over last week and OPS has been league average for SS.

He's made some good plays in the field.

Curious if they put him through waivers and see who bites. Maybe Padres make the claim and we revisit trade talks..?

we backing off chase utley so soon?

Padres wanted baez. But if they'd take castro in a contract swap (which would also likely mean taking on jed gyrko (and you think you guys hate one of our middle infielders now...) with shields, as they seem to think he'd clear waivers and based on how backloaded that deal is coupled with his age, it's entirely possible.

And not to split hairs, but wouldn't he need to be called up in august to be on the post season roster?

Dan Straily just DFA'd by the Astros. Why not? Depth is always good.
