CHC Thread | 10-7, 2nd in the NL Central | PIT (Worley) vs. CHC (Hammel)

The Cubs come back to Wrigley after a 4-2 road trip that you really have to like even if you have a bad taste in your mouth from the Pittsburgh series (Cubs earned a split after taking the first two, then dropping the 3rd game in disappointing fashion and losing the 4th). All in all, a split with the Pirates at PNC is not a bad thing and it's even better after taking both played games in Cincinnati (one game was postponed due to weather).
Kris Bryant is still homerless, but he's still drawing walks and making contact. Addison Russell has been scuffling a bit at the plate, but his big 1-2 count, 3-R double was the difference in yesterday's 5-2 win.
Watch Starlin Castro be awesome. Anthony Rizzo hits the long ball. Jake Arrieta, nails again.
Dan Vogelbach is continuing torching AA ball. He's at .444(!!!)/.552(!!!)/.741(!!!)/1.293(!!!) with 3 HR, 13 RBI, 7 2B (!!!) and a ridiculous 13/5 BB/K. These numbers are even better than any Schwarber, Bryant or Russell start. If Vogelbach can continue to mash like this at this level, he will find himself in Iowa in no time. It's the keen eye at the plate and the ability to generate power without hitting a ton of HR that could make him become a legit prospect, regardless of him being blocked for a long time at the MLB level by Anthony Rizzo.
The Cubs are 3 games over .500 (two back of first place STL) and keeping pace with the Cardinals, who lost their best pitcher, Adam Wainwright, to a season long injury over the weekend. I really am not a Cardinals fan, but I do kind of respect Wainwright and he's been really hampered by injuries in his career. Even still, he comes back from every one and is still very effective.

Dangit Sad Banana, you beat to this thread. Good stuff.

I'm pumped with the season so far. I am just waiting for Kris to get his first HR because the flood gates should open up for him.

I think he's learning where he will be pitched. Once he gets comfortable and kind of knows what to expect, he will start hitting bombs. He appears to be a very smart hitter.

It's fun to be a Cubs fan again even though this team is going to take its lumps and have its ups/downs
For those that follow the prospects a little closer than me how is CJ Edwards progressing? Any chance he sniffs the rotation or bullpen anytime soon?

3.52 ERA, 8 BB/10 K in 7.2 IP. He's in the bullpen right now...he's going to have to do better than that walk ratio to sniff the majors. I think he still has a lot to prove this season.

No chance he will be in the starting rotation in 2015. They moved him to the bullpen in an attempt to put him on a potentially faster track to the big leagues. With that said, they are not ruling out the possibility of potentially moving back to the rotation in the future.

Have an upvote. Seriously it seems like we've been playing the Pirates and the Reds for a month now.

Yeah and after this Pirates series, the next 2 series are vs the Brewers and Cardinals

Hopefully the Cubs can beat up on the Brewers like they're supposed to (they lost Lucroy for about 6-8 weeks and Ryan Braun is hitting .230/.277/.279/.556...yikes. Hopefully we can just keep pace with the Cardinals...I'll be happy with that.

Now that Wainwright is out for the year that's a huge blow to the Cards
If we could add another SP before the deadline and remain within striking distance of the Cards its gonna be a wild August and September

Caveat: before cards fans start accusing anyone of being classless by discussing what the injury does for their team, know I still hate it for waino, but...
The goal may have changed with that injury. I still think we are a year ahead of schedule and would not be ok with trading anyone that's closing in on the majors for another arm...or left fielder if bryant sticks and the cognorfia nose dives...other than voglebach. Hopefully with the lineup we have we can stay in the wc hunt and avoid needing to cross the trade push baring it's for a guy who is controlled for a few years...like cole hammels

Hah. Great job.
I say we go get him. Feel like a 4th catcher is what this team is missing.

We won't stop until we're all catchers.
ETA: But I typed that because it could be bad for Castillo's market if the Cubs are trying to move him...and the sparse bench stays sparse.

At the risk of meatball-ing it up. I think we should keep Castillo and deal/cut Ross. I get that he's Lester's personal catcher and I'm well aware of castillos catching short comings but for a back up...give me beef.

There's really nothing wrong with that at all and I have nothing to rebut.

Cubs recalled Junior Lake, sent Schlitter down to Iowa.

Cubs recalled Junior Lake
ETA: I see that Szczur isn't even eligible to return yet as he has to be in AAA for at least 10 days before being recalled again.
Lake likely won't be around long anyway. La Stella is due back any minute I'd think.

Not surprising at all to see junior get called up.
