Chandler Parsons--How did this guy ever warrant $22,116,750/yr???

Parsons has nothing in his game that ever hinted he could be a marquee player. He's a 13 pt/gm guy. I know Cuban liked the kid, but surely business is business as he smartly let him depart to Memphis. But what did Memphis see in this cat???

Teams in the NBA need to accept that they either can or can't win the conference. Signing free agents is done only to sell jerseys/tickets.
The Spurs signing Aldridge is great, but they aren't beating the Cavs and Warriors in the same postseason because of his addition.

Paying for a guy who they thought would be a stud.
Considering his 2 years in Dallas (and some of his time in Houston) were injury riddled... It was a horrible decision. Worse than that of Dell Demps paying max for Gordon.

So glad the Rockets didn't get tied to Bosh and Parsons during that offseason, which would've been seen as a huge win at the time but was instead seen as a huge loss. Crazy how things can pan out.

He's had some serious knee problems the past several years. He's had several surgeries I believe.
He was a good player and only getting better but the injuries really destroyed his game.
When he was with the Rockets, there were legitimate arguments as to who was the better player, Chandler Parsons or Kawhi Leonard. That sounds silly now, but they were both improving at similar rates until Parsons had career-altering injuries.

A few things--
$22M is not a marquee rate. That's a 2nd option rate in the modern NBA, under the new CBA. Its taking a little while for him to fall back out of the Top 15 in salary, but he's likely to slide into the 20s or 30s this year, and even farther beyond it, if he plays to the end of this contract.
What they saw, was a guy who was a 15-16 point a game scorer when healthy, who could give you 30 productive minutes without killing you defensively, and who was entering his age prime.
Parsons has yet to recover fully to be the player he was, or the player his first five or so seasons indicated he might become. It is extremely unlikely he ever will- but this isn't a huge huge reach, salary structure wise. Its just a medium risk bet that didn't pan out.

quote:this is silly. Parsons value to the rockets was always his contract, and that we used a 2nd rd pick on him. He was a steal bc we were paying him $500K to be the 15-20th best 3 in the league. His value was never his high end skills, but being a very capable NBA player at the fraction of the cost of his peers all with no real investment- just a 2nd round pick.

The rockets had their shot at kawai and went with a Morris bro instead

The Spurs could be pushing the Warriors right now if not for Pachulia's dirty play on Leonard.

Yeah, his contract was great, but he was a really good player too. You must have forgot.
You can even google Kawhi Leonard or Chandler Parsons and see people on many websites discussing that very topic several years ago.
In 2013 Parsons averaged 17 points and 4 assists per game as someone who didn't always have the ball in his hands. He was a great passer in the flow of the offense and could score in and out, he played decent defense, and he was getting better.
In 2013 Kawhi averaged 13 points and 2 assists. But he was good on defense and was improving offensively.
It was a legitimate debate in 2013, but Parsons got injured and never really came back from it and Kawhi kept getting better and better. And I'm not saying Parsons would ever have been MVP-caliber like Kawhi... but most people didn't imagine Kawhi would be this good either. I'm just explaining how Parsons got paid.

You're down 3-0 to a 2 time consecutive conference championship and you believe kawhi could've won the series?
The Spurs were up in a road game that wasn't finished. Anyone can get hurt at any time. Sorry but

Is a what if game many teams could play every year

when the cap goes up like it has, you have to give bad contracts out.
NFL players were crying about the horrible, huge deals, 7th men,8th men were getting, because teams had to get to the cap floor.

With a salary cap, salary floor and a shortage of elite players, the next tier of players are going to end up getting paid more than they're worth. Teams still have to spend that money.
Really it's that above-average players that make out like bandits in the NBA.

With Kawhi the Spurs win game 1 and no telling how the next two go after that

It was a bad FA year if I remember correctly and quite a few teams were looking for that one player or SF that would put them over. Mavericks overpaid thinking he was someone they could build around.

If he could have stayed healthy he had the potential to be a legit 20-5-5 type player. The dude's legs just won't stop getting hurt though. It's kind of sad how much talent is being wasted. Not sure why the Grizz gave him that deal though. Once Dallas was willing to let him walk everyone should have known to stay far away.
