Now granted, he does have the Quicken Loans money pouring in. But man he's throwing a lot of cash at an unprecedented amount

Feel like this is some fudging of accounting numbers to leak this to the media basically as a way to shut Lebron up

Kind of like how pretty much every movie loses money on paper

You could make an argument that he has raised the value of the team but the second LBJ leaves they are back to being a terrible team with no value. Hopefully the championship was worth it

I'm surprised more owners don't view their team as a recreational activity rather than a business.

Maybe because it costs hundreds of millions of dollars to own one

It used to be like this, but then the money got bigger, so the teams became more important to the owners.

it was. he spent more than any team in NBA history the past 3 years in order to facilitate the way for the first championship of any sport in CLE in over 50 years. think about that for a second. 50+ years. any more championships will be gravy

That false there peej

If anything the owners were MORE concerned about the dollars in the old days because they owned it as a business and not to become a celebrity which is basically what it is about today

Of the 122 major North American sports franchises, can you name 20 of their owners off the top of your head? There are relatively few "celebrity" owners.

That's because most have been passed down the family

When big time sports franchises like the NBA or NFL come up for sale, the guy that are buying it want the celebrity that comes with it. and there is a celebrity to it that comes with the major city you're in

Most people can't name one. Most sports fans couldn't name 20.

I would think most people know who owns their local teams... and most who read these boards see owners mentioned enough that they can name 15 in the NFL, 10 in the NBA, and 5 in MLB

But the guys who own teams are worth billions and undoubtedly have more than one way of making their money. I just always assumed they view this as a way to have fun with other guys who have too much money then they know what to do with.

I thought the Lakers and Raiders had situations where the team is basically the family's income. That's why the Lakers gave Kobe insane money at the end -- really, just for TV deals and tickets. But, I'm assuming the teams are toys for pretty much everyone else.
