I spoke to someone familiar with similar negotiations (cable network) and was told that ESPN had been increasing costs since the 90's. They are by far responsible for the largest percentage of cable network costs.

Yeah, ESPN is a huge chunk of the cost pie.
ESPN wanted to go as high as $11 per customer, and providers are telling them to screw themselves.
I believe with espn,espn2,and sec,etc it's close to $9.50ish per subscriber.

NHL will be fine. Most of their money comes from the gate and regional sports TV with a reasonable contract with NBC. MLB will be fine as they have good contracts with the regional TV companies. It's the NFL & NBA that are going to have trouble. College football maybe as well, though you see the BIG and SEC spreading their packages across multiple networks. Those two conferences will be fine as they are diversifying their platforms.

The one good thing for CFB, is that NBC Sports needs programming for their channels. And they have been blocked out of negotiating contracts, because ESPN had all rights. Last deals do not have that option.
NBC already has NFL, they are happy with the Sunday night games, especially since they get to pick the game.

This has happened with every provider with ESPN for quite some time now at every contact negotiation. Sometimes it gets settled prior to the loss of signal, sometimes it doesn’t. Pretty sure Disney (the actual parent company) gets the better end of negotiation every single time since they can leverage sports, kids programming, A&E - Lifetime, and ABC Family. You could cut the chord but good luck gettin ESPN controlled sporting events legally and remember 30% of Hulu is owned by Disney.

I'm discovering that ESPN is also fricking around with groups like Sling TV. Last week I was watching the LSU game in the living room and my wife put it on in another room, and it kicked me off because you can only have one ESPN feed active at one time. I decided to put on one of the alt broadcasts instead (spanish language, control room), and it still banned me.
ESPN expects you to buy two subscriptions to watch their network in different rooms or watch alt feeds. That's freaking absurd and greedy.

Wrong. ESPN is bleeding out, right in front of us. They are constantly having to fire people and re-structure things. They are losing massive amounts of money and massive amounts of support, and no one considers them the immovable object of sports entertainment any longer; and, they will bend to the will of the consumer or they will break apart and cease to exist. It's that simple and it's that certain.

It will be interesting to see how different cookies crumble in coming years. I suspect each of the major sports will end up being their own major distributor. Paying a smaller amount for the specific desired product will salvage more viewers.

I mean, does the SEC really NEED the resources that ESPN provides for them, beyond a national brand? They could put their own broadcast headquarters in Atlanta (The Weather Channel does that) and hire their own commentators. It's not that expensive. Contracting out a local technical crew for their live game broadcasts is not very complicated.
The biggest reason why the SEC needs ESPN is because ESPN/Disney connections are getting them on cable plans and in households. That's why nobody gets the Big Ten Network. As more consumers cut the cord, that strategy is more likely to be irrelevant. The SEC can just make deals with things like Sling, Roku, and Amazon themselves.
