If BYU was a Big 5 program, they would be in a Big 5 conference. It's not as if they turned down the Pac 12 to stay independent or something.

Yikes, we're just really missing each other. I don't think ESPN would put an SEC game on a Friday (contractually they can't put home SEC games there anyway).

Like I said, I don't think would happen anytime soon. But you are kidding yourself if you think it won't eventually become something they push for.

I also think you're going to be wrong on the Thursday SEC issue but that's obviously tbd. The SEC has long pushed tradition over money. It's not like anyone is hurting for money (or exposure) anyway.

Again, see above. ESPN will eventually want it. They will eventually get it. It probably won't happen until they have complete control of SEC inventory by outbidding CBS in the future but it's going to happen. Money is eventually going to trump all. We've already gone through two different conference moves specifically b/c of money and exposure opportunities. That train isn't going to stop for SEC tradition. It might slow down for a bit but it will keep on chugging.

This discussion came from the idea that ESPN might want to make an SEC-BYU pairing happen.

They undoubtedly would. SEC games vs BYU are going to draw better than SEC games vs FCSU/SunBelt in the same time slot. It might be a small bump, but a bump it will be all the same.

My point is for it to happen, the BYU home game would almost certainly have to be Sat, which honestly does very little for ESPN. If they did that, they lose Thu/Fri content and they are already overbooked on Saturdays. So there is little incentive on their part which makes them pretty indifferent to BYU's scheduling.

They don't really lose Thursday/Friday content at all b/c they now have AAC and MWC games to put there if need be. Never mind that they are losing 3 SEC games a weekend to SECN. They also are slowly turning ESPNews into a channel that has games each weekend so they really aren't that overbooked. They will just continue to shift things around a little is all. Hell, they put a Kentucky game on ESPNews last year which means would be willing to do it to other away SEC teams and they have shifted several ACC home games onto it in the past as well.

Well, now we're totally off in the wilderness

Of course ESPN has and will push for it. But ESPN doesn't care about our overall revenue, only tv.

In the end I 100% agree money will trump all. Schools that play on weird days generally are ones that don't sell tickets. There's no SEC school in that boat so the amount of money lost from ticket sales vs the amount gained for tv rights is incredibly small (if there is any gain at all). But the long-term effect could be dwindling attendance. You don't want to get fans out of the habit of making the trip.

The SEC did a review on the fan experience because just using our revenue, our gate receipts (and accompanying donations) are $60+ million per year. TV revenue is simply not there yet. And the Thursday slot just isn't worth much vs an NFL game and several other college games.

actually I don't think they do. It's a hard comp because ESPN rarely plays those sort of games as high as ESPN2. But things like Bama vs CSU got like a 1.7. BYU is just a shitty draw (independence is difficult and hammers ratings). If I'm not mistaken, their 2 games last year on ESPN2 (both against P5 opponents) drew worse than a single SEC game on ESPN2 all year.

ESPN was already selling 30 SEC games to other networks plus the 14 the SEC schools held back so it's actually a wash. It's different games maybe, but from a raw content standpoint, nothing changed.

In the future ESPN will likely lose the B1G but both networks timed that for when the Big 12 trade with Fox expired. But you do have a good point that the AAC and MWC are filler that nobody cares about so I agree they can put them anywhere in the Thu/Fri slots.
