Boxing is not dead. It's just boring, stale, & lame at this point.
Who cares about a punching match, I'd rather watch an actual fight (mma).
Who cares about a free throw contest, I'd rather watch a basketball game.
No way... what boxing are you watching? There are great fighters all up and down the spectrum. Chocolatito, Cotto, Canelo, GGG, Kovalev, Bradley, Stevenson, Wilder, Klitschko, Thurman, Brook, Crawford... and those are just champions. The list goes on and on. How can you not be entertained by any of them? The Middleweight class alone is as good as it's ever been.
There is one class - heavyweight, which hasn't been great for a long time. But that's no reason to put the buzzkill on the whole sport.
I'm so tired of the mma/boxing argument. Why do they have to be mutually exclusive? You can love one and still love the other. I mean, do you know anyone who's ever walked away from watching a fight?
Watch Canelo vs. Cotto this weekend. I practically guarantee a war. Mexico vs. Puerto Rico. Two hard-hitters, one of them the best body puncher in the game (Cotto). If you're not entertained, I will shut up and say vaya con dios. Otherwise. welcome back to the sport. The action is in the lower weight classes.

The early history of boxing is fascinating. In the 1800s it was illegal in many cities. Matches were held out of the city limits and people spread the location and time by word of mouth.
There was no limit on the number of rounds. You boxed until one fighter could not or would not get up.
