Why is he revered as a college football god?

Because he took his team to the Rose Bowl a lot, which is practically all a Big Ten school cares about. That and he beat Ohio State.

Longevity imho. He coached for a long time and that “ten year war” period against Ohio St is still revered. He coached some good players too. He’s definitely not top five though.

He has a similar winning % to Bear Bryant.

He definitely had trouble with the Rose Bowl, but a lot of Big 10 teams used to. Traveling out west without the robust support staffs made life much more difficult.

Definitely overrated by today's standards. I think he was so revered, back in the day, because he was at Michigan for 20years.

He had an Ohio State problem and a Rose Bowl/Bowl problem.

He's essentially John Cooper with more longevity.

He was 11-9-1 against Ohio State and 2-8 in Rose Bowls no national championships. With the talent he had he should have done much better.

He didn't win the games vs Ohio State that mattered, i.e. 1 or 2 loss seasons.

Bear Bryant won 4 national titles with a loss (also 1 loss and 1 tie).

Bo had 4 of those seasons and didn't get the benefit of the doubt. 1972, 1973, and 1974 being a run of three seasons going 10-1, 10-0-1, and 10-1 with no bowl berths (lost or tied Ohio State all three years) and no national titles. That's crazy.

Compare Cooper’s record v Michigan to Bo v Ohio State.

Bo won meaningless Ohio State games (meaningful for Ohio State, he ruined many Ohio State seasons) He lost the ones that meant the most to Michigan.

Michigan lost two games before that win.

Meaningless in the national title context.

Of course those games mean a lot to our programs.
