Polian lucked on Mannning because the Chargers were idiots taking Leaf. He's been living off Manning being dropped in his lap.

The Colts had the first pick.

Polian had already made his name before drafting Manning, he had already built teams that went to 5 Super Bowls.

Well they could have took Ryan leaf... but made the right choice... so I wouldn't say he fell in their lap......

They were never going to take Leaf after what Leaf pulled.

Leigh Steinberg wrote that even if the Colts were enamored with Leaf over Manning - (maybe) - Leaf did everything in his power to piss off the Colts. He didn't want to play in Indianapolis.

Surf or Ski, surf or ski...so Chargers.

According to Stenberg, Leaf had no desire to play for Indianapolis and sought a way to antagonize Colts management into no longer considering him for the top pick.

The Colts were initially leaning toward taking Leaf, Steinberg writes, and decided to go with Manning only when Leaf didn’t meet with them. Steinberg also claims that the Chargers were in on the plan.

“I first cleared the idea with Chargers general manager Bobby Beathard, lest San Diego also question my client’s reliability. Beathard went along with the ruse,” Steinberg writes.

If you have a first round grade on a QB and he is there in the 5th round. You'd be a dumbfrick not to draft him and try to flip him later.

Elephant in the room.

Has there EVER...EVER been a bigger disparity in terms of productivity and career between...

#1 draft pick

and...

#2 draft pick...

Between hit and miss?

Manning vs. Leaf

It doesn't have to be #1 vs. #2 but any #20 vs. #21 or #50 vs. #51.

I mean this was catastrophic for a franchise. There have been bums at RB drafted over super-studs too.

Maybe not football, but the player picked right behind Ken Griffey Jr. was some guy named Mark Merchant.

Never heard of him? Exactly.

Take your choice between dozens of Saints picks

One of my favorites:

In 1971 the Saints in the 2nd round picked the immortal Samuel Holden of Grambling (a NO native and St Aug grad!). Three picks later the Steelers took HOF LB Jack Ham

The Saints' first round pick, one Archie Manning, was hoping they'd pick OL Dan Dierdorf. But instead they chose Sam. The always gentlemanly Archie's reaction: "Well I guess he must be pretty good if they took him ahead of Dierdorf".

Sam Holden played 9 great games for the Black and Gold, while Dierdorf had to settle for the Cardinals and Canton Ohio.

lsupride's schtick is to not just take an unpopular stance, but to go as far overboard as he possibly could in that stance.

Obviously, Peyton fell into Polian's lap, no one would disagree. But the dude is something like a 6 team Exec of the year, so I'm gonna go ahead and say he's not "awn awful awful at his job."
