Big East's Catholic schools unhappy with conference's new members, could split

The seven Big East Catholic, non-FBS schools met with Big East commissioner Mike Aresco on Sunday to express their concerns for the direction of the conference, multiple Big East sources confirmed to ESPN.com on Monday.
Sources said the New York meeting was the first among the seven schools (Marquette, DePaul, St. John's, Georgetown, Providence, Seton Hall and Villanova) and ultimately could lead to them splitting from the Big East's football members.

At issue is whether the Big East basketball-only schools have the power to dissolve the league, and retain all the assets and brand name.

The seven schools are concerned about the additions of full members Memphis, Temple, Tulane, Central Florida, SMU and Houston, and football-only member East Carolina over the next two years to replace departing Syracuse, Pitt, Louisville, Rutgers and Notre Dame.
"The basketball schools are not thrilled with Tulane and what they will do to the league's RPI," said a league source from a football-playing member. "They were not all that excited with that addition."
The source added that "the basketball schools would have fallen off the ledge if we would have added East Carolina as a full member and what that would have done to the basketball league."

The Catholic schools should have their own b-ball conference anyway, IMO.

They could pull some from the A10 like St Joes, Dayton, St Louis U, etc and make a pretty good 16 team league if they wanted to go that big, or just take some of the bigger ones and go to 12.

If the BE football schools split about 5 years ago and added like UCF, ECU and kept their other memebers it would not be in this mess.

The current basketball members only schools should split and add Butler, Xavier, Dayton, St Joes and UMass to go to a 12 team conference that would very good!
Villanova
Georgetown
Marquette
St Johns
DePaul
Seton Hall
Providence
Butler
Dayton
Xavier
St Joes
UMass
That's a nice looking league of schools that are basketball only!!

Has someone told their athletic departments that they're basketball only? That may come as a surprise to them.

Dan Wolken ?@DanWolken
Isn't it kind of hard to say you're upset with Tulane, currently pouring 100 million into sports, when Seton Hall and DePaul are around?
There's your BOOM.

The tension between the football and hoops members has always been the dividing issue in the Big East. Just let the hoops schools walk and form their own conference, and everyone will be happier. Football was a failed experiment.

That would be solid.

They should be pissed and they should do anything possible to save the integrity of the basketball conference.
Buckeye Backer - I really like your list:
Villanova
Georgetown
St. John's
Marquette
Temple
Seton Hall
Providence
Xavier
St. Joe's
UMass
DePaul
Rhode Island
You then can look to teams like Butler/Fordham/Boston University/Siena/La Salle/Dayton/Vermont/New Hampshire/

Seems like UCONN could be the biggest loser in all of this

This has been a long time coming, as the non-football members of the league had been blocking the addition of viable football members for years.
If they've got a problem with it, the non-football schools can merge with the Atlantic 10 to make a new huge basketball conference.

Or what if the basktball only members split, then added 8 more basketball schools and split into two divisions?

It's an interesting argument, given the fact that they were the ones who pretty much created "the brand."

An all-Catholic school Basketball league would look closer to this:
Xavier
Dayton
Villanova
St Joes
St Louis U
St Bonnie
G'Town
Fordham
St Johns
DePaul
Seton Hall
Providence
Marquette
LaSalle
Duquesne
Creighton
That is a combo of all the Catholic schools from the A10 and Big East, plus Creighton from the MVC.
A 16 team league, but with some obvious dead weight if they wanted to go to 12.

What in the hell is RPI? Apparently everyone in the world knows what this is but me. No one on the board asked about it and the article does not even bother to explain what it means. I hate acronyms so much, but especially when people just assume you know what they mean.

I believe it stands for Ratings Percentage Index. But it's basically a formula that calculates your winning pct, your opponents winning pct, and your opponents opponents winning pct, all to varying degrees, with other factors thrown in for home/away games, games vs RPI top 25, etc.

So what is the significance of that number? What do they use it for?
