Better Career: Giannis Greek Freak or Ben Simmons?

These two guys couldn't have been farther apart in terms of pre-draft hype.

Sure, everyone knew the kid from Greece was super long and incredibly athletic, but he was largely just a raw, athletic freak. This kid has worked his tail off. If you had told me when he was getting drafted this kid would be running the Point in his second year, I would have laughed in your face. I figured he would be another Aminu or Kidd-Gilchrist--just an athletic beast with high defensive potential.

Now, on Ben Simmons' end is the story of the golden boy. The silky-smooth highlight player. However, there's a cause for concern: Does he really want it badly? It's no secret he lacks the fire to take over games. It's no secret he's lazy on the defensive end. It's no secret he has an unbelievable skill-set on the offensive end. Will he ever develop a jumpshot?

So who has a better career?
The Golden Boy or the Greek Freak?

Simmons. People need to get over the fact he "coasted" through a year of college. He still possesses inhuman skills for his size.

Completely true

I don't know that this shouldn't be a red flag. He's going to go to a terrible team. He looked very disinterested in winning at LSU. The talent is definitely there to be a superstar. But, he also seems like he could have the mindset to just collect the paychecks. I'm thinking of guys like Carmelo, Boogie, etc., in the sense that I don't think they really care if their team struggles so long as they get paid and put up stats.

I think this is a good assessment, will he put up numbers, sure, but he doesn't really seem very interested in winning or the team.

Granted he likely wasn't coached his entire time at LSU either so maybe it's just that too.

im all in on Simmons.

better passer than Freek. Better handler, and more explosive with the ball in his hands

Couldn't agree more; however, you could've said the same thing about Michael Beasley in the '08 draft.
Hell, Batum was drafted 25th overall in that draft, and even he's had a better career than Beasley.

I think his biggest concern in college was not getting injured.

Johnny Jones also is amazingly bad.

Can we also remember that his game was a mess at LSU? I watched him drain about 15 20 footers in a row during the warmup of a game that he didn't shoot a single jump shot. His game lost it's mystery because he couldn't fluently move between the point and forward part of his game. And when other teams wanted to, they could completely shut him down.

I'm higher on giannis than simmons at the moment.

Much regarding potential upside will hinge on where Ben ends up, though.

He could go to the Celtics. The Nets earned that pick by being terrible, but didn't want some poor guy to mire away in their shitstorm so they traded the pick away to the Celtics. Very noble of them.

the difference being Beasley smoked his way out of a really good career.

shooting is not yet one of them though.

I would not draft him, since he is going to be top 5.

I want someone who can play the game already for the top 5 pick.

If people had to play 4 years or until they are 20 this would not be an issue. All the big guys are very raw. Look at the descriptions. None of them are really polished at both ends of the floor. You don't see a Danny Manning or a Bill Walton in the bunch. Its a crap shoot.

I know why the NBA did this. Guys were being signed to long term deals in Europe so by the time you drafted them legally in the NBA they were already tied up in Greece or Spain.

Ben Simmons was statistically the most impressive freshman in ages. Sure his shot needs work, but the idea that he can't "play the game already" seems ludicrous.

Simmons is the most NBA ready player in the draft. He has ball handling & passing skills that play immediately.
