Got me thinking, who really was the best of their time? Who was the most entertaining?

I grew up in the 80's, but wasn't old enough to really care about Bird or Johnson. I remember them cause my dad watched them, but other than that the first times I really remember paying attention to them was on the dream team... I then went on to be a huge Jordan fan.

I still think Jordan is the best and as a player alone was the most entertaining, BUT... he lacked the straight up rival that Bird and Johnson had in each other... along with the team rivalry between the Celtics and Lakers.

I'd have to say...

Jordan - Best and most entertaining player.

Bird/Johnson - Best rivalry/entertaining moments between two of the easily top 5 NBA players of all time.

Jordan by far the best athlete and best all round player. Bird was the best passer and defender, and had a sixth sense about always being in the right place on the court. Magic was the ultimate mismatch. He was too big for a small man to guard, and too quick for a big man to guard.

This is totally the wrong board, but Bird was not the best defender of those three.

I don't even think bird was the best passer.

I'd say Johnson was the best passer.
Jordan was the best defender.
And Bird was the smartest and most technical.

All were great leaders.

Bird didn't have near the physical ability of Jordan or Johnson, but was just as good as both of them in many aspects due to playing smart, sound, technical, and unselfish play... (and they all did those things well, bird just did them so well it overcame his physical lack)

God, could you imagine merging those three... then giving them Rodman's ability to rebound...

Bird was a gym rat with a high motor, a true student of the game.

They were all great. Three unique, once in a generation players.

great description.

I think Jordan was a guy that had all the physical ability, but it took him awhile to become a student of the game.. (beating the pistons and winning his first 3) Then after that he had to adapt as he got older and lost some of that natural physical ability. The bulls workout regiment and conditioning started a new trend in NBA... along with Jordan perfecting his leadership that fade away of beauty (what led to his last 3).

This really is a MSB thread

Bird and Magic's passing were scintillating

Although I'd put Ginobili's passing right up there with the best of 'em.

In that order.

Jordan never beat Bird

They were ALL iconic players with unique skill sets. Jordan may be the most talented to ever play. Jordan came into his prime when Magic & Bird were leaving theirs.

It seemed at the time that the talent surrounding Magic & Bird was more balanced than that which surrounded Jordan, though the argument can be made that they made their teammates better. In my opinion, Jordan is so vigorously defended by those of my generation as the best ever because it seemed that for about an 8 year stretch, he could 'will' his teams to titles. His 'killer' mentality is(was) unrivaled in all of sports IMHO.

Jordan vs the whole Pistons was enough. He didn't need a Bird as a rival. Those Chicago vs Detroit series were always fun and physical.

More than Jordan, Bird or anyone else, Magic made everything look so easy. Best player I've ever seen.

You don't understand team defense. Bird is possibly the all time best help defender in the nba. Very close between Bird, Pippen, and russell. Jordan was not interested in defense for half of his career, so it seems dumb to say he was the best of those three. Bird was a great defender always. Rebounding is a big part of playing defense, and Bird was a great rebounder. amazing how many rebounds he got not being quick or a jumper. Most people give the detroit bad boys credit for making defense a focal point, but Bird did so long before the bad boys.

Jordan was super-athletic and relentlessly competitive. His drive is what made him so good.

However, IMO both Bird and Magic were more skilled players. They weren't as athletic as Jordan, but it was incredible to watch them find ways to score and make plays. Certainly much more entertaining to watch those two play.

Peoples obsession with basketball in the 90s has always been weored to me. The 80s were the better decade. You had magic, larry, and Michael going at the same time. The NBA was almost dead at the start of the 80s and by the end, it set everything up for Michael to make this a global sport
