@MLB: BREAKING: @Orioles plan to call up INF Manny Machado - 3rd overall pick in 2010 Draft - from Double-A Bowie before tomorrow's game vs KC.

Wow. Shocking news.

Machado is a top five prospect in baseball.

ETA: Machado's AA numbers this year:
BA .266
HR 10
RBI 58
OPS .781

He's 20

Don't understand this much.

Looks like he'll play 3rd, where he has played a total of 2 games in the minors.

But he will put fans in the seats.

@jonmorosi: Manny Machado has played two games this year – two! – at third base, which is where he’s expected to make his major-league debut. #Orioles

Wtf are the O's doing?

This is seriously their push for the playoffs move after doing nothing at the deadline...

Very, very bold move.

In their defense. They've had shite playing at 3rd.

It's just hard to throw a 20 year old out there that has only played the position twice.

And also shown little to no consistency in the low minors and 1/2 a season at AA

I don't think the move to 3B is that big of deal. He's extremely athletic and should handle it fine.

However, to call up a 20 year old ops'ing less than .800 in AA is extremely aggressive.

Could screw his future for a chance to upgrade your production from 3B.

Not every top prospect comes up and plays as well as Trout and Harper. Those are once in a generation talents.

Will he steal any bases or just a power threat?

Speed isn't his game.

His bat projects at an elite level at the big league level, especially if he plays SS. With that being said, he hasn't torn up AA pitching like one would have hoped.

Not very much of either yet

Should develop power but likely won't steal many bases at the major league level

@BenBadler: Hope not. Trout dominated AA last yr, Machado hasn't RT @Eli_DeGrateACE Did the Angels promotion in '11 of Trout inspire the Orioles in '12?

Not sure how .220/.281/.390 could inspire them considering Trout was actually hitting minor league pitching well

Wasn't Harper having a problem hitting in AA?

This makes no sense, but he has been hot & cold. Who knows? Maybe he will get hot & this will look like a genius move until he cools down and hits 210/245/502 in September.

He was hitting .240ish this season but it was his first year in AAA, but the GM of the Nats really liked his approach at the plate. I think he was putting a lot of balls in play perhaps. Not sure..

but I don't know anything about Manny Machado.

Harper was a year & 3 mos younger than Machado

Harper only had 258 pro ABs below AA. Machado has had 836. Not a ton but a lot more than Harper.

Harper showed more in A ball than Machado has shown in 3 years.

I still think Machado will be good... just not yet
