this is why I'm not high on Bortles and high on Murray.

Yeah, look at Murray's stat line against top 10 defenses. He's awful: a completion rate hovering around 50%, lots of INTs, just 245 yards a game and just one win against eight losses.

ETA: Contrast that with Manziel, who I cannot stand, but throws for over 300 a game with a completion percentage of nearly 70% with another 55 yards a game in rushing. He actually posts more efficient numbers against stiffer competition. He may be an arrogant douche a-hole but he can back it up (at least at the college level).

That's a very small sample of games and the win/loss is due to much more than QB play.

Look at his numbers against top 35 defenses and compare them to his overall numbers.

Hell, Murray has almost as many starts against top 35 defenses as some of the more hyped QBs have against all opponents.

I wish it was broken down by year since some of those guys played for a long time and not everyone is a stud as a freshman

Regarding your Manziel comment, you tend to throw a lot more and for more yardage when you're behind.

But regardless, do you even sample size, bro?

I dunno, that's 9 games against elite competition. I think it's pretty telling. The top 35 defenses don't matter as much (at least to me), because the number of playmakers at a upper tier SEC school like Georgia usually put them in the top 35 on offense. I think seeing how Murray has done against stiff competition exposes something.

True, but #1, how come this isn't the case for many of these QBs (like Murray)? And second, while number of yards go up, often completion percentage goes way down (which Manziel's doesn't).

Blaine Gabbert attempted 143 passes per game against Top 10 defenses? Calling shenanigans on these stats.

Compare Manziel and Murray against top 35 defenses. Manziel crushes Murray in almost every category from overall winning percentage to total yards to completion percentage (this one is particularly damning to Murray). When you throw in the fact that Manziel adds an astonishing 80+ yards a game rushing, there is no comparison.

This chart tells me that Murray is a good but not elite QB that feasted against average teams and struggled against top 35 defenses and was outright awful against top 10 defenses.

ETA the actual numbers:

Murray against competition OUTSIDE the top 35 defenses:

93% winning percentage
67.2% completion
5.79:1 TD/INT ratio

Murray against competition INSIDE the top 35 defenses:

35% winning percentage
56.6% completion
1.48:1 TD/INT ratio

Contrast that with Manziel's numbers-

Manziel against competition OUTSIDE the top 35 defenses:

94% winning percentage
68.2% completion
4.40:1 TD/INT ratio

Manziel against competition INSIDE the top 35 defenses:

Record of 4-5
70.2% completion
2.25:1 TD/INT ratio, considering rushing stats, in addition to 82 more yards a game in that category as well

So yes, you do see a drop as defenses get tougher but it's not nearly as pronounced as Murray's drop.

I see it better now.

in all seriousness though, I just don't think McCarron will have the same type of success in the pros.

doesn't have a lot of zip on his throws. And a lot of his highlight reel passes came on play action fakes when his WR's were wide arse open.

I was serious about Norwood though. I think he's an underrated WR in this draft. He made a lot of clutch catches in college plus I'd imagine he's a decent blocking WR because Alabama ran so much.

as for McCarron, not many players from Mobile have really succeeded in the pros for whatever reason. Chris Samuels is the last guy I can remember who was drafted high and had a decent career. Mark Barron is still young and has a chance I guess... same with Nick Fariley...although he's already had a few run ins with the law. Its not so much about his play on the field.

two of some of the most colossal busts in NFL history have been from Mobile. Keith McCants and JaMarcus Russell.

I think McCarron has a shot to get drafted kind of high though... maybe 2nd or 3rd round. Some team will bank on him because he won a lot of games and that's understandable but I just don't see him being an answer as a long term QB.

chart basically says Manziel is the GOAT

Makes me think Cam is the GOAT and definitely since that team may not have gone to a bowl without him and they went undefeated.
