I heard the place was packed out.

I have a Thrashers sweater in my closet. Their logo and color scheme absolutely fricked!

But according to most on here Atlanta can't support hockey.

It was a sell out, can only imagine what a properly run NHL team would look like especially if they’re playing well

Some goalie, trying to make the shows, tried out for them, said it was an absolutely horrendous run org. They were clowns from top to bottom in org. Guy went back to Sweden to play, he's from Canada.

from the video he showed of practices and such, it looked like a shite show

They said the same thing about the Braves, and people actually go to those games.

While I wouldn't mind because it's very close to me, that area is so fricking crowded already, traffic wise.

it goes back to the thread about cities with sports rivalries. I truly think that the New Orleans/Atlanta NFL rivalry is perpetuated by New Orleans folks more than anything. For some reason, the jealousy there is strong.

Atlanta is a great sports town for college and professional sports. It just so happens that it is such a popular city for folks to transplant to that we have people from all over. It's the city with the most Big Ten alumni, the most SEC alumni, etc. When the Thrashers were a thing, it was always cool to go to a game when they played a team from the northeast because their fans finally got a chance to see their team live. There are a ton of hockey fans in the metro area and I think it'll thrive this time around...especially if located in Alpharetta.

Speaking of locations, am I remembering correctly that the Phillips Arena/State Farm Arena extensive renovations makes it impossible to convert the floor to ice now, or am I making that up? If true, a new NHL team would have to build a new arena whether they want to or not.

I keep hearing people from Louisiana talk about how Atlanta is the worst city in America for sports

We have four thriving professional sports teams (Braves, Falcons, Hawks, United)

College football is massive in Atlanta (UGA, GT, college football hall of fame)

Atlanta 500

We have three very good all sports talk radio stations

We host super bowls, College bowls, final fours, SEC championship, World Cup games

Umm, hello.. the Olympics!! Since when has Louisiana ever hosted the summer Olympic Games?

We have some of the best high school football in the country

Kid sports is massive here (baseball, football, basketball)

We have 3 world class stadiums/arena - Mercedes, Truist, State Farm arena

Truist Park constantly ranks in top 10 in attendance.

I’ve been down to a few hawks games on work nights (middle of the week) and it is a fantastic experience.. the few games I’ve been to were sold out or close to capacity

I’m just baffled why ANYONE would call Atlanta the worst courts City in America. You mean to tell me it’s worse than Miami? Worse than New Orleans who doesn’t even have a fricking baseball team?

Give me a break. It’s the same ones who think New Orleans/ Atlanta is some world renowned rivalry- it is in their heads but Atlanta doesn’t give a flying frick about their New Orleans. It’s really weird.

A lot of transplants in Atlanta who would like to have a hockey team to root for because they don’t have one where they are from.

I’m from New Orleans but live in East Georgia. and would love to have an nhl team here.

The least woke sport.

People that don't live here have no concept. OTP people hate going ITP, so we don't do it. Braves proved the point. Stadium is full every night because it's in a better place, closer to the people that would go.

The area proposed near Halcyon is home to tons of transplants and tons and tons of money. Hockey is popular here. The Thrashers didn't have an attendance problem, per se. The owners just didn't make as much money as somewhere else where they get more of the gate, parking, etc etc. It's not rocket science.

Nah, this won't be in "Atlanta," and the owners will make money and fans will want to attend.

First time in a suburb where hockey is huge due to the rich transplants from up north who love hockey.

Downtown Atlanta? NOPE - suburb - hell yes.

Getting to downtown Atlanta from suburbs to catch a game is incredibly difficult due to traffic. It makes for a long evening. (especially if you have to work the next morning)

Downtown ATL (proper) is NOT a hockey town, but Atlanta suburbs would be a huge success. However, Downtown Atlanta is actually a huge success of Soccer. From what I have gathered, the previous hockey attempt was a failure because of the management - the fan support wasn't really the problem

We have two hockey rinks here in north metro (The Cooler and Ice) with significant youth leagues. College teams played here for a while, too. Auburn vs UGA for instance. Gwinnet Gladiators put 5k per game in the stands for minor league game.

This is exactly it. There is a strong little brother complex w/NOLA people.

I thought I had heard the same thing but I can't be 100% sure.

The NHL wouldn't even be considering coming back to Atlanta if it was just strictly a downtown location.

Maybe thats how it started, but I know a lot of Falcons fans and the hate is absolutely mutual

Its also been a 2 team race in the division for a long time. The Panthers and Bucs would put together something every now and then, but the Falcons and Saints until the past couple of years were consistently up there competing.
