Astros owner Jim Crane, general manager Jeff Luhnow and seven-time Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens visited Tanaka and his agent Casey Close for about 90 minutes in Los Angeles on Jan. 6 in hopes of recruiting the Japanese ace to Houston.

quote:

A few days later, the Astros presented an offer north of $100 million for Tanaka’s services, according to a person with knowledge of the negotiations.

quote:

“The point of the meeting was to expose (Tanaka) to the Astros and convince him,” Luhnow said. “It was a good learning experience. Hopefully next time we’ll get across the finish line because we want the best players in Houston.”

quote:

“We had a great meeting,” said Clemens, who is a special assistant to Luhnow. “Jim Crane and Jeff Luhnow made a great presentation for the Astros and our city of Houston. It was fun to be a part of.”

Sounds like a PR move

Go after something you know you wont get to get the fans thinking youre looking to dump that kind of money for a guy

As an Astros fan, this does very much sound like a PR move.

I'm glad they stuck with their number rather than paying Cy Young type money to a guy who hasn't pitched an inning in the MLB.

We'll see how things play out with the other FA SP's. I'm on the fence about our rotation in terms of not rushing guys like wojo, trop, folty and of course Appel vs signing a guy like Garza or Arroyo to go with Feldman, cosart, etc. Being that Tanaka is only 25 helped with the spending issue, but the others guys that will only be looked at as 2's or 3's in other teams' decent rotations is hard to overlook and overspend...

They didnt "stick to there number", they came up with a number big enough to make it a story but not big enough to actually be a real contender for his services

Why go to a team that is worse than his former J-League Team?

Yeah, and I'm sure they would have shite if he said "Ok, where do I sign..." I can only imagine what Crain would have told Luhnow... "I thought you said he has 3 offers north of 140?!? Damn it, now I have to pay this guy!"

I'm glad he didn't come here. I would hate to see them spend that kind of money on someone who has not pitched at all in the MLB. Yes he is great in Japan and may be great in the MLB also, but it's not really a for sure thing to be worth that kind of money right now imo. There have been plenty of players from Japan that had tons of hype for them that didn't exactly pan out as expected, but there have been plenty who have. It's just too big of a gamble for a team that is going in the right direction and developing talent.

Yeah all of a sudden there would be reports of "they hit a snag in negotiations" and they would claim he wanted some outrageous clause that they wouldnt allow or something

at only 20 million refundable posting fee i'd expect every team to make an offer that was reasonably competitive.

all you had to do was post 20 mill, fly to LA, make a pitch to him, then tell your fans, we tried. Every team should have done this.

I heard an interview with the Astros' GM on MLB satellite radio. Built the farm in 2 years but expected 3. Ready to build ML team.
Springer will be a "superstar".

I like that projection for springer because mlb.com just ranked Almora ahead of him. Which really surprised me but certainly excites me.

LOL. Most of you shite on the Astros for being cheap and having a roster full of no names. Yet this off season, they've been in on the top two IFA's, Abreu (at one point were considered the front runners) and now offered $100+ million to Tanaka. Now to shite on them, its "this is just PR, they knew they'd lose him." Because you offer a guy over a hundred million dollars for shits and giggles.

Welll there is truth to that statement. 100 million was never going to get it done so it's not a legitimate offer and certainly doesn't rise to competing for his services. So what else is it?

And yes I'm still mad that the Yankees got him.

And south of realistic chance of landing him. So leaking the offer is only to give you the warm fuzzies. There is a reason as it came down tot the wire no one said "watch out for the Astros offer". Pick whatever number north of 100 million you'd like. It's the same as saying you offered him a happy meal because it was never competitive.

Sorry for reading articles about his signing and using basic logic.

I can see how that's considered inside information to you as it's such a foreign concept.
