Its clear by Lunhows recent comments that they will sign a few free agents this offseason. It appears they will go after a solid mid-tier bat to be the DH. Also looks like they will go after some mid-tier solid OF help.

Could Nick Swisher be an option for them? Who are the other OF/DH bats that won't break the bank but are better than platoon, punch and judies?

I really doubt it. He's 32 and looking for a Jayson Werth type contract.

Looking at the FA list, it doesn't look like there's much to choose from. I wonder what kind of contract Delmon Young will get. There are a LOT of over the hill FA's this year.

Not a bad thing IMO.

I think these youngsters could use some veteran presence on the team.

I think they should go after 1 maybe 2 veterans that do not cost too much in Free Agency. They've had high picks in draft last few years that have not developed the way they wanted. If I was Astros I'd go after the number 1 pitching prospect in draft from college (not high school), get a veteran solid 15 game winner in free agency, then a solid veteran for the younger talent to have as leader. Not Nick Swisher!!!
Berkman is a good pick- Brings leadership, he is from area and coming off injury so should be pretty cheap and possibly sign to a mid-size contract and 2-3 years so he can retire an Astro.
Mike Fontenot would not be too expensive either. Veteran leadership once again but struggles with consistency. James Shields from Tampa might be a good long term invetment for rotation. Astros being a contender is about 2-5 years away at this point depending on how draft picks develop. Hopefully they stay away from Roy Oswalt and Wolf though I can see them looking at both.

So clever. I bet you would never switch the astros situation with the Reds.

Don't be upset because i know more about your own team than you do.

Would Berkman want to come back?

And, let's sign a real 3B while we're at it: David Wright

is it pretty crazy to say Arod, if the yankees pick up a butt load of the contract? Can play 3b or DH

Possibly. But we can't give him a lot of money. Getting old and bad knees.

This really better be a joke. He'd cost a lot and will not be a longterm investment. Plus we'd be bidding against clubs like Boston for him I think.

Haven't lived in FSSW viewing area in a long time and, combined with how terrible the Astros have been, I haven't followed them closely. Was their animosity from Berkman towards the Stros when he left that I am unaware of? They dealt him to a contender which is all anyone on the trading block can ask for right. I personally would love to have the Big Puma back on the team.

There really isn't much talent on the market that makes a lot of sense. Why spend $5 - $15 mil just to pick up 7 or 8 games -- end of the day, you're still a 100 loss team.

I say, keep the payroll as low as possible, pull in all of the draft choices -- maybe even pay the luxury tax this year by drafting some of those "hard to sign players" that slip each year because they have scholarships to the top-tier colleges. Unfortunately, the Astros won't be competitive until 14, and even then they'll only be a .500 team. They no longer have any trade prospects... so, it's time to over-spend on high-upside draft picks.

And, lower beer and ticket prices for home games.

You need to be semi competitive, you have a brand image to keep up. Also having a strong veteran presence in the club house is extremely underrated. Your team culture is very easy to manipulate right now with lots of young guys and a new coaching squad, its important to have it go in the right direction.
