This was probably a funny reply in your head, so I’ll give you that much.

There will be a lot of people that will give you downvotes simply because of who there head coach is. (Major Applewhite Baton Rouge native, but specifically Catholic High grad). Besides the point that he genuinely is great person and human being outside of football.

The staff was obviously gutted by Herman to UT. No assistant would stay at the University of Houston if the same position was offered at the University of Texas (higher pay, more prestige, etc.) But I actually believe and while I may be biased somewhat Coach Applewhite has done a really good job in his first year. If you are a G5 school and you go on the road and beat a P5 school it does not matter where you are or who you are coaching that should be a plus (Beat Arizona on the road). They played Texas Tech down to the wire and only lost by 3, I know moral victories and participation trophies dont matter, but when you are a midmajor and compete it says something about your program. Ed Oliver may be the best DT in all of college football the dude is an absolute animal, to get double teamed week in and week out and still do what he does says a lot.

But at 4-3 losing to Texas Tech, Memphis (Fuentes was just there), and Tulsa (high octane offense) its not like the rails have fallen off. And to those saying he hired Chris Scelfo as an OL coach, if you can hire a former FBS Head coach as your OL coach with deep ties to a recruiting area, and who had some success (I know hard to believe winning at Tulane or just being bowl eligible during Hurricane Katrina he couldnt get it done so he is a terrible football coach).

Nick Saban even when he was at LSU does not hire even the lowliest of assistants lightly, Major Applewhite was Saban's first OC at Bama, so the nonsense that UH is now completely irrelevant or a nobody is false. They are just now a pretty decent Group of 5 football team. Okay they are not a Top-25 BCS buster/talked about as making the New Years 6 bowl. But to say they are irrelevant is both silly and just stupid.

It's a little known fact that Houston, despite having a breakout season, being ranked in the T10 for several weeks, beating Oklahoma and Louisville both while ranked third, that Houston finished SIXTH in the 2016 AAC standings.

This sentence bothers me.

Houston would be a good addition to the Big 12. Too bad the Texas schools won't allow that you happen

Yep. Scelfo just isn't a head coach.

The mistake wasn't hiring him as a position coach. The mistake was Tulane hiring a position coach over a young up and comer.
