Jesus christ I guess I was like 15 then because his name is definitely on that ball and I remember him being skinny as frick compared to what he is now

I take back what I said, I guess I'm the dick for being a 15-year-old trying to get an an all-time great to sign my baseball.

He is an entertainer, like a court jester or circus clown. His job is to entertain the fans.

I saw him play personally 10-15 times, lined up 2-3 hours before and after games and never got an autograph. Yet he still entertained the hell out of me. Some of you are entitled as frick and expect way too much out of people

It's just funny to me how in my experience, his entire team spoke to myself and the other group of kids I was around. They were signing anything within sight. Granted, none of those guys were really greats or anything.

If I had to guess, Griffey standing to the side of the rest of his teammates during all of that is him thinking he's above that than anything else.

Regardless, like I said I think he's a dick, but I'm not going to measure someone's success in a sport on what they are when they aren't playing. I'd assume most athletes are assholes.

Not sure if you're directing this question to me or not, but no, I did not.

All the talking heads talked about how much he did/does behind the cameras. In fact, a NY fireman who died in the WTC, was a huge fan. After his dad reaching out to him, Griffey has hooked up with his kids and wife every year since. They were in attendance with his family.

I was a youngster and was at a game with the A's early 90s with Mcgwire and Rickey Henderson. Henderson was an a-hole and didnt acknowledge us kids holding out bats and balls etc. but McGwire spent a ton of time signing stuff. Right or wrong I loved McGwire and hated rickey henderson with the fire of ten thousand suns for a LONG TIME after that

FWIW, Griffey was also under contract with Upper Deck and was limited to the # of autographs he could sign for the public

Honestly didn't even know this was a thing. Probably explains it.

Maybe he was talking about Juan Encarnacion.

Anyways with respect to Jr., he was my favorite player growing up, everyone wanted to be like him. Hell I even tried to bat left handed to imitate him. However, the stories of him being a jerk are fairly numerous. Not Bonds level, but still difficult to ignore. I'm glad to see him make the HOF, I do think if he had stayed healthy he could have had a shot at the HR record

Loved Griffey growing up. Went to a Texas vs Cincy game when I was really young. Brought a ball to get signed and myself and 25 other young kids were screaming for Griffey to just acknowledge us or sign our shite before the game.

Not one even glance in our direction. I will never forget that.

had a totally different experience with him. went to sarasota with a baseball for spring training the first year he signed with the Reds. We were all hanging out outside hotel, throwing the ball and playing basketball, and this range rover pulls up. Griffey gets out, happened to be staying in the hotel. He signed everything and talked to us for like 30 minutes. He seemed like a great guy

I'd assume spring training is a bit different than in the middle of the season. He's probably been asked 10,000 times that season for an autograph by the time I got my chance

Not many people know Griffey tried to commit suicide. Google the number of pills he swallowed. It was an ungodly amount.
