Anybody notice those oven mitt looking things MLB players are wearing?

On the basepaths. Must be some evoshield product. The players I've seen wear them only have them on their right hand. Seems like that would protect for a dive back to first. But on a head first slide into 2nd, the left is usually the one reaching for the bag. Anybody know what the deal is with this?

It is to protect their fingers when sliding, so they don't break them.

I know Marte started wearing one after he injured his hand. Could just be acting as a soft protective brace

When diving back to 2nd they would still be using the right hand. Generally, the head first slide while trying to reach second base is rare, especially when trying to break up a double play.

Not new. K Rob & several other LSU players wore them all last season. Saw several players on teams in the playoffs wearing them, too.
