I'm not quitting on him. I'm just not ready for the Braves to commit to him long term yet. I don't believe he's earned it. Problem is, he may get butt hurt and not sign an extension.

He wouldn't be the 1st player and certainly won't be the last who had all the tools and just can't put it together.

You're seriously comparing Jason Heyward to Jeff Francoeur?

Again, I'm not comparing him to Francoeur. I'm comparing the situation in that it appeared the Braves had a RF with all the tools who people believed was going "to put it together anytime now" and it just didn't' happen.

I'm not giving up on him yet, but if he shows no improvement between 2013 and 2014 barring injury, then I believe it is right to worry if this is as good as it gets. Though, there are some late bloomers (jose bautista), but they're few and far between.

Its the 2nd week of the season. If you wanna question someone question BJ and Justin.

The only reason the braves would have to overpay for an average player is the poor job drafting and developing they've done of position players in the years since Freeman and Heyward graduated. Unfortunately, with nobody on the farm and no good OF that year in FA, we're stuck with hoping Heyward becomes a better hitter than .240. I know he's still valuable if he hits .240 with 20 bombs and plays solid defense, but the Braves need him to be a 5 WAR player consistently.

I think it goes without saying about those 2. It's obvious what happens there. We let Justin walk and we're stuck with BJ a while. frick.

Heyward is a real question mark though. I mean, what if we extend him in a deal similar to Freeman's (that will be what he's asking most likely) and he stays at the level he was for 2013 at the plate? That is not a good spot to be in.

I'd manage to call it a pop fly halting your progress and eliminating you from contention of said ball punching.

I also realize it's only the 2nd week. However, Heyward needs to improve consistency. Hopefully that comes with age, but it really sucks to endure a .150 BA for 2 months until he decides to remember how to hit to raise his average to .240-.250. We need him to get back to hitting .260+ with 25 bombs like he did when he was younger.

I am all for the Kid getting extended. If he wasnt hurt last year he would have been the first to get an extension.

Once again its the second week of the season. Dont be so quick to criticize a 24 year old that is being forced to hit lead off. Because we dont have a lead off hitter. Honestly I would rather play Schaffer over BJ.

Schaffer
Simmons
The Kid
Freddie
Uggla
Gattis
Justin
CJ (just to clear the pitcher)

ETA: I would rather hit CJ 2nd and Simmons 8th

He is batting 1st which means he is being asked to hit for contact.

Someone needs to teach him how to hit an inside pitch. Seriously the dude can mash, but the cat's out of the bag on him right now as far as his inability to catch up to inside pitches. This is the big leagues, time to shorten up that swing

Just NO. That's an insult to Griffey to use his nickname on a player like Heyward.

I agree with all of this. BJ is useless. Schafer at least has better speed and makes contact more often and can hit leadoff to let Heyward bat down in the order. I like Freddie in the 3 hole though. Your best hitter should get more at-bats. Freddie is by far the best hitter on this team.

This. He stands so far off the plate to even try and help himself with that. His batting stance is extremely weird in that he almost looks like the kid from Rookie of the Year afraid to get in the batter's box.

Again, I'm not overreacting to this season. Just looking at how he's started this year + his body of work so far (inconsistency) is really concerning. If he can't shorten his swing or turn on anybody that can throw 93+, then he's destined to be mediocre.

It seems to me he is way too busy at the plate with all the flinching, he doesn't have a very solid stance and he stands in the extreme back corner of the batters box, almost to the point where his left foot is out of the box. Of course all of this has been brought up before and people have tried to correct it but he just isn't comfortable with changing it up...to me until that gets fixed he will always be very streaky and have extreme ups and downs.

okay. Here's Heywards swing and stance from 09. Notice he isn't far from the plate because pitchers haven't started jamming him in yet. Look at where the back foot is.

Here's Heyward at bat from this year. Notice how far from the plate he is due to his adjustment to pitchers pitching him inside. Look at his back foot. He hits the shite out of this one, but the pitcher didn't get it down and it was only 89.
