I coach high school baseball and so far this year we've dropped some games simply due to fielding. Way too many errors to be successful. Most of what I'm noticing is our players not approaching the baseball on their toes, very flat footed and high. I've considered trying to add the short hop step. (right, left, hop) Any other tips from you guys on ways to correct some of these?

Use the Hell out of a fungo and hit worm burners at them until they get it.

Are they not flat footed and high during practice? If they are just doing it during the game, it is a lack of focus.

Set the ball in front of them stationary. Make them field the ball laying there on the ground. Will force them to be on their toes and stay low

No, but let me direct you over to the Tiger Rant. Click on any in-game thread during an LSU baseball game and you will find about 100 coaches in there, none of whom can understand why Mainieri was hired instead of them.

What is their pre pitch routine? They starting deep and taking a couple of steps in on their toes as the pitch is being thrown?

infield without gloves and hit the ball a little easier than normal but not slow rolled. They will have to get down in proper position to field the ball. Do this everyday for a few weeks.

Of course in today's world somebody will go to the school board calling it abuse.

I did this growing up and fielding was always my strong suit. That drill and the one where my coach would hit ground balls to each side getting them further apart progressively helped with footwork and quickness.

I did a lot of that preseason but definitely haven't lately. It's been wet as hell here and I have no infield facility to go to. Thanks!

I have them playing a couple of steps behind the middle. Normally just a right, left sway routine, but they still seem to rigid at times.

Mixed in practice. It's definitely more prevalent in the game.

This the same as right left receive? Hopping probably isn't a good way to field a ground ball.

Creep step + right left receive = less errors. If they have stone hands invest in a flat mitt. At the high school age there is only so much you can do. Either you are fluid or you aren't.

Are you talking about adding right, left, small hop as their pre pitch routine? If that's the case, then you're right. It is something their should be doing. It's basically a modified version of the creep step that a couple other people have mentioned.
They should be landing from their small hop right as the ball is crossing the plate. Just make sure that their hop isn't too big or too late or they'll be caught in the air when contact is made.

Make sure they are staying low and fielding the ball out front. Some kids field it too deep and it can cause them to take their eye off the ball resulting errors and mis-played balls.
