That Pistons team that is arguably one of the best defensive teams to ever play in the NBA IMO.

Hahahahahahahahahahaha. They gave up around 100 pts a game average.

In fact, that pistons team gave up 100.8 points per game. Which would have them tied for 14th this year.

They arguably weren't even the best defensive team in the NBA the 2 seasons they won it all, much less one of the best ever, fwiw.

They were good, obviously, but I think nostalgia is playing a part here.

The Rockets were basically as good, and the year before MJ won it all, Utah was definitely better defensively.

DRtg is a better indicator. They were 2nd and 4th in their 2 title runs. Good defenses, not all time good though.

The 2nd title team gave up 104.7 points per 100 possessions, the 2011 Mavs gavae up 105.0. Guys can pick that apart and argue it however they see fit, that's just the facts.

See this is also why it is impossible to compare different generation players. Nobody actually remembers the past. All we see is clips and nicknames like the bad boys and you get post like this. The fact is defense until the late 90's was putrid. And I'm not calling you out specifically my man

Possibly

And perhaps what I should have said is that no other team was better suited to shut down Jordan than Detroit and they proved that. They had the correct personal for it. Mostly Dumars but Rodman and Laimbeer played a huge roll when MJ would drive to the basket as well.

I would love to know what you think of defense today.

you telling me the Goat was able to be stopped by a rich white boy down low? Jordan never would have allowed that to happen......Oh wait!

Just kidding. Lebron is not the GOAt. Jordan is. But Lebron is awesome and let's enjoy watching him. Just like we should enjoy Durant. And when they retire then we can start his all over again

So the GOAT is currently who??

James had a terrible game but he's not the only one making lazy passes. No snap on the passes and bad shot selection on top of the fact that the Heat wasn't playing like they were worried about closing the series. As TERRIBLE as James played...... they still could of won the damn game. Man didn't play the whole 3rd quarter. Pacers still need to win the next 2 games..... not gonna happen.

It's better, actually.

The best possible way to rate a defense is points per possession.

From 1990-1995, the average defensive rating(points per 100 possessions) was 107.8. From 2009 to 2014 it's 106.7

1990 108.1
1991 107.9
1992 108.2
1993 108
1994 106.3
1995 108.3

2009 108.3
2010 107.6
2011 107.3
2012 104.6
2013 105.9
2014 106.7

I'm assuming your laughing because it should have been so obvious that defenses are better today?

The "Bad Boys" Pistons aren't exactly ancient...there are plenty of us who actually were alive to watch them play.

That said, the 03/04 Pistons were a much better defensive team and arguably the best since 2000.
