Great read, I know a bunch of you hate bleacher report. Things like this are fun to read, because you get perspective from those who were directly involved.

If I wanted an oral history, I'd read the Colorado police report.

I loved that Lakers team. Still remember sitting in the living room after they got beat by the Pistons and watching it all disappear when it was announced Phil Jackson wasn't coming back. Still remember Kareem Rush (I think) hitting six threes in the one game the Lakers won in that series.

One of my least favorite LA teams to watch. It was such an awkward cast of characters that couldn't stay healthy or get along.

Don't think this ever happened. Lakers got zero production in that series from anyone other than Shaq and Kobe. The one game they won in the series was the one game that Kobe actually played well, and he had to hit a three to tie the game in the final seconds.

Pretty much every analyst picked the Lakers to win that series, too. It was such a beatdown.

Just looked it up. Should've taken the time to look it up before. Kareem hit 6 consecutive threes against the T'wolves in the conference finals.

ETA: Fun fact I learned from googling Kareem Rush.. it appears he has a music career going on now..

great read indeed. there was so much going on with that team, so much drama, that when it was all over I didn't watch the NBA much that next year. so much of it seemed unnecessary. you had the best perimeter player, and best big, work it out, keep winning. go down as maybe an even better dynasty than the Bulls.

this point was interesting, and one that had me pissed at Kobe during and after the series.

quote:

Chauncey Billups: Our game plan was very calculated. We knew we were going to play Shaq straight-up. We knew there was no way we could stop Shaq straight-up. And there was also no way we could stop Kobe straight-up. But, if we’re going to play Shaq straight-up, [the Lakers'] eyes are going to get big, which means they’re going to keep throwing it down there.

...

But what’s going to happen is Mr. Bryant is going to get a little discouraged with getting no touches and now the second half comes around…now he’s pressing. He’s going to start coming down and just breaking the offense. When you do that, you’re done—you’re playing right into our hands. Even if you start making those shots, you’re finished.

the Lakers weren't just huge favorites going into the series, people were openly talking about this being Kobe's year to be Finals MVP. hell I think Shaq even mentioned it. and even though the Pistons couldn't stop Shaq, I felt like Kobe was doing too much to try and be Finals MVP.

I thought that was pretty interesting too. It was just the perfect storm for Detroit really. Malone was injured, the rest of the team was playing like shite and the Shaq/Kobe feud finally came to a head. Those two obviously hated one another back in those days but that was the first time it affected them on the court imo.

The hungrier and better team won.

Honestly, the Bleacher Report has gotten much better. Gone are the days that some irate fan could go on and post an article how Coach X needs to be fired.

Most of the columnists these days have to go through an application process followed by the internship program.
