Because of the multiple seasons with no tournament appearances and bottom half league finishes

Is it time to throw these takes in the shitter?

They have the 3rd most national championships of any program

A summation of how their fans feel about it from one of the UConn message boards:

quote:

Blue Blood is about royalty. We aren't royalty. This is America. We're the ones who buy their estates when they're broke. Let them wear tweed and be sanctimonious about antiquated titles. We'll just keep winning.

I felt LSU football was similar to UConn basketball in terms of feast or famine, but hell, LSU football isn’t even anywhere near having the 3rd most national titles in football

UConn hoops is more similar to LSU baseball. Decent program until a legendary coach came in the 80s and built the best program in the nation.

6 titles in only 7 Final Four appearances is insane.

UNC also has 6 titles but 21 F4s. Duke has 5 and 17. Kansas has 4 and 16.
Michigan is the anti-UConn with a 1-6 record in title games.

Another crazy stat.

Syracuse and UConn each have 68 NCAA tournament wins now. But Syracuse only has 1 title to UConn's 6.

21 Final Fours is insane more than 6 titles.

They played basketball since 1901 and won their first championship in 1999.

They were mostly absent for the entire 20th century. How is that a blueblood?

You find the Minnesota Vikings’ 9 conference championship appearances more impressive than the Chiefs 4 super bowls?

So essentially, if your first title was won within the last 50 years, it’s impossible to become a blueblood

What is the arbitrary timeframe? When UConn wins their 12th national championship in 2049, are we still gonna say they’re not a blueblood because they didn’t start racking up championships until much later than the other guys?

People should just come flat out and say it’s impossible to become a blueblood if that’s the criteria. If by the year 2050, Georgia has 12 CFB national championships to Texas’s 4, i would probably laugh at someone saying “well Georgia isn’t a blueblood like Texas!”

but you think Indiana is a blue blood even though they haven’t made a final four in over 2 decades? While UCONN has won 5 titles during that span?

The whole Blue Blood argument is so stupid.
UConn has 6 titles since 1999.
In that time frame Duke and UNC each have 3, Kansas 2, UK 1, while UCLA and Indiana have none.
Who cares about subpar seasons in between when you have 6 titles in 25 years!

I’m not sure if I’d necessarily agree, but I guess you can argue that given the recency of their success, they aren’t up to Kentucky, North Carolina, UCLA, Kansas or Duke’s level. They’ve undoubtedly surpassed Indiana and those other second tier programs, however.

If anything, UConn is at least in blue blood purgatory.

UConn has become a blue blood with these back to back titles. Heck they have more than Duke and Kansas and they are not done yet. More titles on they way for them.

Eh not a direct comparison especially when the Chiefs have been in at least 8 conference championships (off the top of my head) in their own right.

Kansas’s 22 title certainly helps them bc it gave them 4 but I’ve always looked at them kind of like Michigan football.
All the wins and conference titles in the world but so few titles compared to the other blue bloods and their titles are all so far apart. No cluster of titles together like the other blue bloods.
Not hating on Kansas bc they are a blue blood but I think they are one of the lesser blue bloods which is still great.

A good comparison is LSU baseball. Maybe they arrived late but most certainly a blue blood.

That’s fair. They have 6 titles and the 2 teams with more than them have only won 1 title combined in that time frame.

UCONN is the best current day basketball program, blue blood or not.
