A Question About the Astros

Although a Yankee fan as a kid, when I was in college and law school, I followed the team pretty closely. After that, I sort of drifted away from baseball as a fan. I did enjoy the Astros success in 2005. Since then, I've lost track.

Anyway, my question is this. I know they eventually developed a good farm system, and this team is performing ahead of schedule, it seems. But are these guys for real? Can they hold on? Is it worth it to re-invest in this team (even though I'll have to deal with them moving to the AL)?

So you're saying you're a Fairweather fan?

Maybe.

I'm definitely saying I sort of lost touched with baseball for various reasons. I am curious about the Astros, though, and if they're for real.

1. This post is the definition of bandwagon fan.

Cool. I have a lot of shite to pay attention to in my life. I have to be sort of selective.

They have some pretty good pitching, steal a lot of bases and hit a lot of homeruns.

They are a good team and will remain good for the whole year. I don't know if they are good enough to stay 1st place in the American League like they are now... but they are a good team and will only get better.

1. Don't listen to Lester Earl

2. The thing that has separated this club from previous years has been the pitching. Our bullpen has been awesome this year. A couple of waiver wire surprises, a couple of good free agents, a Rule 5 pick, and a prospect here or there...and the had the best bullpen ERA in MLB for the first two months.

3. Starting pitching started really promising, but there's been an injury (Feldman) and a AA call up (McCullers). One of which has been dealing with blister issues (Oberholtzer). Also Collin McHugh isn't the same guy this year as he was last year. This is the biggest area of need if we plan to trade to stay in contention.

4. The offense is just flat out weird. Tons of low average guys who can all hit the long ball. As somebody who has watched just about every game so far, I can tell you that they have all started pretty slow offensively.

If they get a pitcher and some of these guys start hitting regularly like they've done in the past, we will have a shot at the postseason.

3/4's of the IF sucks arse offensively

they need at least one more pitcher at least a #2 level arm

but the OF and the Bullpen could be the best in baseball

There may be room because some bandwagon Rangers fans who left after Ron Washington left may be back with Josh Hamilton.

Villar is crushing right handed pitching right now.

But I don't expect it to last. He knows his days are numbered with Correa waiting in the wings.

In the outfield Marisnick is ice cold, but Tucker has been a surprise. And Springer is starting to get it going.

Agree about the #2 starter

I seriously don't see them making the playoffs this year. But, as you said, they're ahead of schedule. They started off scolding hot, but they have some serious holes in the rotation and on the corner IF spots to make a playoff run. To me, 80+ wins is a successful season for this team.

As a fan, yes yes yes ,playoffs!! Grrr!!! But realistically, 2016 and on they'll be serious contenders, IMO.
