A new college is building a football program in south Louisiana, and they've hired a coach

CROWLEY — John Melvin University became the latest college campus to make Louisiana its home in 2021, and it's now starting to build its first football team.
The college is located in Crowley but had to go all the way to Franklin, Tennessee, to find a coach to assemble the team.
Don Lee has been named the head football coach for John Melvin University’s football team.

Lee said the school is in the perfect spot when it comes to recruiting because it is on Interstate 10.
Lee stressed that football is going to be a big part of the recruiting pitch but he said it goes beyond that.
“ I want to give these young men an opportunity to play football but also to get a good education in the process," Lee said.
Lee said he already has nearly 50 players signed on to play and is working on assembling his coaching staff. He also put into perspective what to expect from this team in their first season.
"We are going to have a bunch of freshmen playing against juniors and seniors so it may not be pretty for a little bit," Lee said. "But stick with us and wait to see how we come along and grow and get better as a team because I have seen it happen everywhere I have been and this is not going to be different."
The team is currently in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and is working on becoming part of the Red River Conference. They will be traveling to play games teams in Texas and Florida with a few home games sprinkled in to show the NAIA that they are a real and competitive team.
"Louisiana loves their football, and I am so excited to get the season going and seeing everyone out there and to get some more of that food because it is just so good," Lee said while chuckling.
They will have to play at least eight games before being eligible to be placed in the Red River Conference and have four road games and three home games scheduled. Lee said he is working hard to find someone to play for that last game but is confident that they will find an opponent.
The team’s season set to start on Sept. 2, and their home games will be played at Gardiner Memorial Stadium in Crowley, where the high school Crowley Gents and Notre Dame Pioneers play their home games.

A guy that I work with has a son that’s going to play football there. He put up a grad announcement in our office and has the son in a jmu uniform. I asked him where it was and he said Crowley. I had no response

Their "campus" is a dumpy looking aluminum building. I know from experience NAIA's usually arent much but theyll need better than that.

the school is $15K/year and has 10 teacher on staff.

seems odd they wouldnt wait until the school was established before spending the kind of money they need to spend to run sport programs

I was reading up on the kid that the school is named after. Apparently he ran track at ULL. Anyone know how he died?

My neice played softball there this past season, they are an online class only school currently but she is not reenrolling because school has a long way to go with funding, recruiting and support. Ladies softball only had 9 total players and season was a grind with no bench. Not sure of football program

The school is nothing more than a way to separate stupid people from their money. They've figured out the specific mechanism that works best for them is post high school athletics. They're not worried about building a school. They're only worried about building an income stream.

Their season actually ended prematurely due to a kid quitting. May have been an academic thing but they couldnt even finish season 1.

A kid from our HS signed there. QB, pretty fast,no arm to speak of. AFAIK he didn't get any other offers. Nice kid, I hope his family isn't paying out of pocket for any of this.

Surely we'll be reading in the not to distant future that this place is nothing more than a scam scheme, right? Aren't they not accredited at all? So any "degree" is worthless.
If I had to guess the scheme goes that normal tuition is $14,000 per semester but since they're just getting started they offer "athletes" partial scholarships and tuition is only $4000, so dumb parents go for it because they want to see Brackztyn continue his baseball career. Except, literally everyone on the metal building campus is a scholarship athlete and they're just raking parents money that think their kid is now a collegiate athlete.

Meh, there's a DII in Denver that has a couple dorms, trailers for class rooms and admin, and a small arena.
