The picture is real. The umpire got there immediately and the player put the boy down on the ground. I believe the ump is an EMT. He worked on the boy until the ambulance could get there. Completely surreal. The little guy actually stood back up for a moment before collapsing.

I didn't see it happen. I had a friend that saw it that just happened to be looking that way after the K. He went to go get the bat at home plate and wandered into the finish of a practice swing. He was wearing a helmet. Apparently, he was hit at the base of the helmet. Sad story all around.

That's Gavin Wehby holding Kaiser. Gavin plays for Nicholls State, and he gave a very touching tribute to the family.
